Job Summary and Qualifications
- Demonstrates professionalism through consistent reliability, respectful communication, and adherence to company values, policies, and ethical standards. Maintains a positive attitude and represents the organization with integrity in all interactions.
- Handles and processes specimens in accordance with policy, ensuring proper identification.
- Performs accurate clinical/diagnostic testing, routine, specialized, and esoteric testing, according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) on human biological samples within the scope of practice of one’s education and training.
- Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines.
- Operates laboratory equipment correctly, performs troubleshooting according to procedures and explores new solutions as needed to resolve problems.
- Performs required quality control testing on equipment and reagents. Knows acceptable levels of performance.
- Reviews temperature charts, maintenance records, quality control records, and calibration results.
- Maintains a clean working environment. Manage inventory efficiently; awareness of material outdates, stock rotations and reduce waste.
- Analyzes, interprets, and reports laboratory results according to protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Maintains accurate, current, and complete records.
- Able to recognize and resolve problems utilizing independent judgement and critical thinking, relying on procedures and applying scientific knowledge.
- Communicate effectively to other shifts and interdepartmentally when appropriate, regarding patient and operational issues.
- Notify management or other key stakeholders of problems or issues, as appropriate.
- Documents corrective actions taken for problem resolution, instrument maintenance, or quality control/test performance, including errors.
- Meets all personnel standards in governing, regulatory and accreditation requirements for clinical laboratory testing.
- Oversee, participate in, and review proficiency testing and competency assessments to meet regulatory requirements including direct observation, review of results, and creation of quizzes and tests.
- Overseas and conducts education and training for new personnel, fellows, residents, students and visitors within the Laboratory scope of practice, including updating training documentation.
- Able to recognize when staff require additional or remedial training. Responsible for overseeing retraining and remedial training for staff when necessary.
- Responsible for updating and maintaining policies and procedures when needed per their department.
- Assists with staff scheduling including monitoring breaks.
- Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on patient care, the work unit, the department and facility operations.
- Works effectively inter or intra-departmentally and with teams to meet patient needs and organizational goals. Participates in quality and process improvement projects.
- Attends and participates in continuing education opportunities to maintain relevancy and currency in professional practices and standards.
- Assists Lab management in any department specific changes, upgrades or projects in a timely manner.
- Responsible for department preparation and representation during times of inspection.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
