Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Lab Assistant, you will play a crucial role in solving diagnostic mysteries, bringing us one step closer to effectively treating patient illnesses and injuries.

Every day you will utilize your expertise and our advanced technology to precisely collect, prepare, and process a diverse range of patient specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) for various diagnostic tests.

  • Job Specific Duties for all Lab Assistants 1.1 - 1.10, Job Specific Duties for specific areas are as follows: Phlebotomy 2.1 -2.5, Processing 3.1 - 3.4, Pre/Post Analytical Duties 4.1 - 4.7. Evaluation based on direct observation of routine performance, monitoring entry of information in the Laboratory Information System, review of records and logs, direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks, assessment of technical and problem solving skills, and co-worker/customer feedback. Metric is identified as an action. Metric is evaluated by criteria that E = exceeds, M = meets, or DNM = Does not meet the desired performance.
  • Communication techniques result in understanding by all ages served. E: No complaints and at least 2 validated observations of outstanding communication techniques. M: 0-2 validated complaints or observations of failure to use age specific communication techniques. DNM: 3 or more validated complaints or observations of failure to use age specific communication techniques. (non-applicable for non-patient care positions)
  • The department, as a whole, meets current Lab Council patient satisfactions goals for the assigned facility. E: Lab exceeds current Lab Council goal for patient satisfaction. M: Lab meets current Lab Council goal for patient satisfaction. DNM: Lab does not meet current Lab Council goal for patient satisfaction.
  • Utilizes the A.I.D.E.T principles on a consistent basis. A Acknowledge I Introduce D Duration E Explain T Thank you E: Consistently utilizes the AIDET principles. Supervisor has received positive feedback from fellow employees. M: Utilizes the AIDET principles with infrequent complaints from patients or fellow co-workers being brought to the attention of supervisors. DNM: Frequent reminding of behavioral expectations or the need for corrective action.
  • Keeps work area clean and organized. Maintains inspection readiness. E: Consistently maintains all areas of responsibility in an inspection ready state and does so with no reminding from supervisors. M: Disinfects work area at least once per shift. Keeps supplies well stocked. Maintains all areas of responsibility in an inspection ready state however some reminding is required by a supervisor. DNM: Frequent reminding or the need for corrective action.
  • Clarifies orders as needed through communication with nursing units, clinic offices, or tertiary reference labs, documenting actions taken. Follows verbal and or written instructions on a consistent and accurate basis. E: No documented errors / omissions per year. M: 1-4 documented errors / omissions per year with none that require corrective action. DNM: 5 or more documented errors per year, or corrective action required.

Job Requirements

Required

  • California CPT-1 or CPT-2 or certification or other California state certification permitting phlebotomy.
  • One (1) Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist experience (Exception: when staffing is experienced enough to support a trainee,applicants with a phlebotomy certification and no experience will be considered).
  • Phlebotomist: CA, upon hire


Preferred

  • Lab Assistant/phlebotomist in an acutecare hospital
  • One (1) year experience preferred
