Under general supervision, assist in the monitoring and controlling of aquatics and non-aquatic patron activities; enforce swimming pool rules and regulations; conduct rescues and administer first aid treatment to children and adults in distress; teach all levels of instructional swim programs; and perform other related as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Technical or functional supervision may be provided by higher-level aquatic personnel.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments as needed.)Teach all levels of instructional swim program; patrol swimming pool and park assigned areas, correct unsafe practices, assist swimmers in distress; enforce swimming pool rules and regulations regarding conduct of patrons; administer first aid treatment as needed; assist in park, facility and swimming pool maintenance; may test and record chemical levels of pool(s); may assist in record keeping and collection of fees; uphold and enforce California health codes, and perform related duties as assigned.To quality for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:
Education and/or Experience:Equivalent to completion of ninth grade. Minimum age of 15 at the time of appointment and possession of a work permit.
Knowledge of:Water safety and lifesaving techniques; and techniques and methods of swim instruction.
Ability to:Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations; instruct swimming and other aquatic activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and diversified population groups having varied needs and expectations; deal effectively and courteously with the public; think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and communicate effectively orally and in writing. Bilingual skills are highly desirable.Possession of and ability to maintain the following certifications form the Red Cross or equivalent: Bloodborne Pathogens Training; Asthma Inhaler Training; First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22); Administering Emergency Oxygen; Epinephrine Auto Injector Training; Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. Possession of certifications from City of Alhambra Lifeguard Training Class and as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is highly desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Perform various tasks for extended periods of time requiring physical strength, dexterity, and endurance, which includes sitting, standing, walking, swimming, running, turning, twisting, bending, balancing, pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting and carrying and feeling; hear and speak to the general public, including children, youth, adults, senior citizens, and co-workers; read instructions, reports and logs; and observe swimming and recreational activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Direct sunlight, heat, humidity, wind and cold while working outdoors; chlorinated water and chemicals; high noise levels from patrons who are playing and swimming; infectious childhood diseases.
SELECTION PROCESS:

Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.
