About This Position:

This position serves as a regional technical specialist within the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Section, supporting statewide communications and infrastructure programs including roadway flood detection, traffic camera systems, device maintenance, fiber optic protection, and wireless/wireline communications. The role leads ITS Technicians in maintaining and repairing traffic technology such as cameras, message signs, detectors, and other ITS equipment, while providing advanced technical expertise in fiber optics, microwave, data, voice, and network communications. The position also ensures compliance with state and agency policies, requires operation of a state vehicle with a valid driver’s license, and reports to an ITS Technician Supervisor.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Five years of experience or training in the maintenance and/or repair of electronic, electrical, or telecommunications devices, components, networks, or systems; OR

An associate’s degree in electrical technology or electronic systems plus three years of experience or training in the maintenance and/or repair of electronic, electrical, or telecommunications devices, components, networks, or systems.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in electrical technology or electronic systems will be credited as one year of experience.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.Job Duties:
  • Provides functional supervision over technicians, vendors, consultants, and contractors supporting statewide ITS communications, flooding detection, traffic video, fiber optic, and infrastructure programs.
  • Oversees project progress, reviews work quality, and recommends contractor/vendor work for approval and payment.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert for ITS device and system maintenance, ensuring equipment, software, and network components meet Federal Highway Administration standards and remain operational.
  • Troubleshoots complex network, fiber optic, microwave, and communications system issues, conducts inspections, and advises management on system impacts and corrective actions.
  • Provides technical training, user support, and consultation on the design, operation, and maintenance of ITS communications equipment and systems.
