Position: Interpreter

Status: Full time, seasonal

Location: Flint Ridge

Salary: $15/hour

Summary:

Assists in the coordination of daily visitation and other educational programming within the site.

The primary responsibilities of seasonal part-time interpreters will be to facilitate educational and interpretive programming at Flint Ridge. The work will involve leading adult groups as well as classes of children ages 9-10 years of age on tours and conducting hands on activities to engage students while they learn about American Indian history and Ohio's geology.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead educational and other interpretive programs including school field trips, scout groups, adult groups, etc.
  • Assist with onsite public programs, interpretation and other museum events, including staffing site outreach and education tables at events
  • Conduct assigned tasks independently with minimal supervision; assist in the implementation of larger scale programming as assigned by the Interpretive Supervisor.
  • Create a positive and fun environment for visitors of all ages and backgrounds by being hospitable, approachable and engaging, encouraging participation in impromptu and planned interactions that promote curiosity and relevance.
  • Assist with the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary to ensure safety of visitors, colleagues, and the site.
  • Champion and promote mission and values of the organization.
  • Lightly assist in maintaining the organization and cleanliness of the landscape and facilities by picking up litter, emptying trash, sweeping, and mopping as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 0-3 years experience working with members of the public in a service, retail, or educational capacity

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Comfortable communicating with staff and the public, both orally and in writing
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Proficiency in various office software suites and virtual platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft 365.

Work Environment:

Requires daily contact with staff and the public in with exposure and interaction with individuals from a variety of audiences. Frequent exposure to typical levels of noise and human activity.

Involves interaction with children.

This position offers up to 40 hours per week, with shifts scheduled between Wednesday and Sunday. Specific days and hours will vary based on operational needs. Scheduling will vary to accommodate institutional needs and may include evening, weekend and/or holiday work.

Physical Demands:

Work is performed at Flint Ridge, which are primarily outdoor sites, which include direct and prolonged exposure to the outdoors in various weather conditions. Position requires frequent standing and walking distances up to a mile during tours and traveling between buildings, structures and site features, as well as over uneven terrain. Ability to lift or move up to 25 lbs.
