INTERNAL POSTING - Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician III

This employee will be tasked with operating and maintaining the main diesel engine(s), generator(s) and other shipboard systems on SCDNR-MRD's R/V Palmetto or R/V Lady Lillian while conducting scientific research cruises in coastal and offshore waters of South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Hatteras to Cape Canaveral.
Job Duties Include:
  • Operating main engines, generators, various pumps and motors, A/C units and hydraulic systems while underway.
  • Keeping all systems on line through good P/M and parts replacement as necessary.
  • Completing extra inspections and troubleshooting as necessary to keep systems functioning smoothly.
  • Maintained assigned vessel and all associated Department equipment.
  • Performing routine P/M on main diesel and generator engines, generator, hydraulics, electronics, deck gear, rigging and all Department issued vessel equipment.
  • Training/assisting other mechanics as needed to maintain all MRD vessels.
  • Ensuring proper spare parts and filters are requisitioned and maintained for engineering department on board.
  • Developing spec sheet for annual yard period.
  • Working with the captain to prepare overhaul specs for engines and engineering specs for yard work.
  • Operating all heavy deck gear, as well as, supervising/instructing scientific party in the safe operation of winches, long-line reels, pot-haulers, and other heavy sampling equipment.
  • Serving as chief safety officer of the deck during operations at sea.
  • Deploying and retrieving sampling gear safely.
  • Working with the Chief Scientist to insure sampling gear is maintained and in proper working order.
  • Utilizes various procurement methods, as necessary, to meet vessel operating and maintenance needs (P-Card, PO, CVRP).
A high school diploma and four (4) years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training or experience that would enable the incumbent to satisfactorily perform the job duties.
Ability to direct, supervise, and train personnel. Knowledge of lifesaving, safety and firefighting procedures relating to engine room work on a sea vessel. Ability to interpret technical service manuals. Ability to communicate effectively, prioritize and make optimal use of personnel, materials, and equipment. Ability to develop procedures and define actions for specific situations. Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the designated area. Knowledge of basic computer skills. Ability to run diagnostics and perform all necessary preventative maintenance tasks necessary to keep large main diesel engines, hydraulic systems and other shipboard systems operating efficiently, both at sea and in port.
