Job Title: Intern - Early Childhood Teacher

Department: Kids First

Classification: Non-Exempt, Termed* (Full-Time position, up to one year)

Hiring Range: $24.05/hour - $27.06/hour
Salary Range: $24.05/hour - $36.08/hour

Position Summary: The Internship is a learning position, training and coursework are required for completion of the term. Provides substituting, and release time for licensed childcare staff providers consistent with the organization’s values and mission statement. The program typically runs between six (6) and nine (9) months, and may extend up to twelve (12) months depending on completion of requirements and program needs.

Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the general supervision of the Kids First Co-manager of Programming.

Essential Job Functions:
Training
• Completes all required trainings to earn Early Childhood Teacher Credential 2.0 within designated timeframe. Co-creates and follows professional development plan including observations and reflections, to earn ECT credential. Disseminates information and promotes Kids First services and programs.

Substituting
• Substitutes in licensed early childhood education programs, in Pitkin County, serving children ages 6 weeks to 5 years according to priorities approved by Kids First.
• Responsibilities include lifting children, diaper changing, indoor and outdoor activities, quality interactions with young children, classroom cleaning and effective communication with directors, teaching teams and City staff.
• Responsibilities may also include food preparation, toileting, hand washing, and caring for ill children until parents arrive. Travel to childcare programs in Pitkin County is required.

Coordination
• Helps to coordinate the substitute schedule with the Early Childhood Teacher on staff who is responsible for all scheduling. This coordination may include communicating with childcare directors and teachers. Includes maintaining communication with Kids First staff.

Administrative
• Assists Early Childhood teacher in maintaining records for accurate billing and demonstrated need for substitutes in licensed childcare programs. Assists with administrative duties in the Kids First office when required.
• Attends Kids First staff meetings and other training as required.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: No prior experience required; candidates may have limited or volunteer-based work experience suitable for referral.

Technical Knowledge: Must have a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.

Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

Preferred Candidate: Candidates with current CPR/First Aid certification and bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English) are encouraged to apply.

NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.

Position Type and Work Hours:
• Full-time, termed, Monday through Friday, hours may vary with workload. *This program is typically completed within six (6) to nine (9) months, though in some cases it may take up to twelve (12) months. The goal is to earn the Early Childhood Teacher Credential 2.0, and participants are expected to gain a certain number of hours of classroom experience working with children during this period.
• Evenings/Weekends may occasionally be required depending on department needs, training schedules, and special projects.

Work Environment:
• Indoors: Classroom and office environment at Kids First and in local childcare centers. Potential exposure to germs and illnesses common in childcare settings.
• Outdoors/Off-Site: Playgrounds at and near recreation facilities. Meetings, trainings, and conferences at a variety of city facilities and areas.
