Our client, a private K–12 school in Atlanta, is seeking an Interim Controller to step in immediately and stabilize its finance and accounting function following a departure. This is a hands-on, execution-focused engagement — reporting directly to the Head of School — where early on-site presence is required. The right candidate brings Controller-level experience, QuickBooks Desktop proficiency, and the ability to hit the ground running with minimal ramp-up.
Why It's Worth Your Time
- Serve as the primary finance lead from day one — real ownership, real impact, immediately.
- Work directly with school leadership and a Finance Committee with full visibility into operations.
- Advisory scope extends beyond execution — assess systems, identify risks, and advise on outsourcing and modernization options.
- Engagement expected to span multiple months with flexibility as the role evolves.
- Meaningful work in a mission-driven, community-focused educational environment.
What You'll Own
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations including AP, AR, cash management, and bank accounts.
- Ensure payroll continuity — near-term submissions, funding, and approvals.
- Manage tuition billing, collections, reconciliation, and parent-facing finance questions.
- Prepare and deliver monthly financial packages including balance sheet, P&L, and cash flow statements.
- Perform month-end close, budget-to-actual analysis, and variance reporting for non-financial stakeholders.
- Support active tuition season activity including contracts, financial aid, and enrollment-related finance.
- Guide and supervise an existing bookkeeper throughout the engagement.
- Document processes and institutional knowledge to support outsourcing transition or future hire handoff.
- Advise on QuickBooks Desktop limitations, upgrade readiness, and cloud migration sequencing.
Must-Haves
- 8+ years of accounting and finance experience with Controller-level or senior finance leadership responsibility.
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Desktop / on-premise versions required.
- Proven ability to step into organizations quickly and operate with minimal ramp-up.
- Strong working knowledge of GL management, month-end close, payroll processes, and cash management.
- Experience supporting nonprofits, private schools, or other mission-based organizations.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders and leadership.
- Immediate availability — start within days, not weeks.
Nice to Have
- Experience working with Boards or Finance Committees.
- Exposure to audits and coordination with external auditors.
- Experience supporting finance outsourcing transitions or system modernization efforts.
- Familiarity with FACS or similar tuition management systems.
