An Intake Juvenile Probation Officer (JPO) is responsible for completing a preliminary investigation when the arresting authority refers a juvenile to Barbara Culver Juvenile Justice Center according to Texas Family Code. The Intake JPO determines, through investigation, the release of a child unless it appears that his/her detention is warranted under the Texas Family Code 53.02(b) criteria. The Intake JPO is the first contact with Law Enforcement during the Intake Process plus will provide information for Law Enforcement as to processing a juvenile. The Intake JPO is responsible for processing all the paperwork of juvenile intake. They will also coordinate initial meetings with the family’s plus assigned to managing the detention hearings for juvenile cases and make contact with all involved personnel. They will be completing all necessary intake paperwork as the case proceeds to the District Attorney Case Review meetings. They are responsible for supervision and tracking of juveniles on Pre-Adjudication processes and up until cases are assigned to a Juvenile Probation Officer or disposal of cases. The Intake JPO reports to Deputy CJPO—Programs/Intake/Training.

Include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Receives all referrals from law enforcement entities within Midland County.
  • Ensures that all intake paperwork is properly processed and completed in compliance with Departmental, Court, and Texas Family Code Standards.
  • Entering juvenile information into Juvenile Case Management System (JCMS) for all juvenile referrals.
  • Sets up contact with families that are referred to intake (Paper or formal referrals).
  • Supervises all referrals of juvenile from time of intake, during, & release from detention for both Midland and Contract Out of County cases.
  • Maintain communication with law enforcement, school officials, Out of County JPD’s, and any other agency for intake matters.
  • Sets up detention hearing notices and prepares all paperwork for Detention Hearing Judges plus any other required legal documents.
  • Coordinates and attends all Detention Hearings on behalf of the department.
  • Communicate and assist Culver Detention staff with any intake matters for juveniles currently detained.
  • Keep contact with families of intake juveniles currently detained in Culver.
  • Some contact and communication with TJJD staff for detained juveniles that are runaways from other counties or Interstate Compact cases.
  • Prepares all referral paperwork necessary for District Attorney Review meetings and sends notices for meetings.
  • Collaborates with all Juvenile Probation staff, Program staff, Culver detention staff, all involved court officials, school officials, Law enforcement, Contract County JPD’s, mental health professionals, Child Protective Services, and any other agency that may be involved in the intake process.
  • Obtain background information from family’s, complete all necessary reports (MAYSI-II, Assessments, etc…), and initiate Pre-Pact/Pact report for all juvenile intakes.
  • Handles confidential, sensitive, and/or restricted information pertaining to juveniles and/or families.
  • Attend meetings, staff trainings, briefings, and any other meeting required by Juvenile Probation Administration.
  • Provide recommendations to Deputy CJPO Programs regarding improving operations of the Intake process and/or functions.
  • Assigned to handling intake phone for incoming calls and/or in person inquiries for intake.
  • Provide support, guidance, and advocacy for youth, when appropriate, in the school setting, legal setting, and in the community.
  • Assist JPO’s with field visits and may be called upon to assist with placement visits.
  • Assist JPO’s with transport for youth to appointments and any services in/out of Midland County.

  • Perform all other related duties and responsibilities as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department.

This is a non-supervisory position. Must have ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Implement effective program strategies with fidelity. Establish & maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff and families referred to programs. Knowledge of child development and the role of the family. Knowledge of individual and group behavior. Must be able to work flexible hours including after hours, evenings, and weekends as needed. Ability to plan and conduct curriculum-based instruction in small and large group settings. Collect and report data as required by the department. This position also requires on-call duties at times throughout the calendar year.Regular and consistent attendance is required. Must arrive at work on time, prepared to perform assigned duties and work assigned.

Must be over the age of 21, a U.S. Citizen, have valid Texas driver’s license, pass a criminal background check;

Requires bachelor's degree plus one-year experience, or one year of graduate study, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Juvenile justice system; Texas Family Code, juvenile law; all TJJD standards, and standard office practices and procedures.

Operate computers; read & write reports, letters, and other documents using proper format and grammar. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; physically restrain other individuals; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, juveniles and their families, and the general public.

Certification as a Juvenile Probation Officer by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department. Maintain a valid Texas Driver's License.
