Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

Duration: Full Time

Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Summary

As the I&C Engineer, you will be responsible for developing high-quality detailed design packages, providing engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and providing expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant systems. This role requires broad expertise in instrumentation and controls engineering within nuclear or industrial environments, with a focus on PLC/HMI systems, process control, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

1. Prepare conceptual engineering deliverables including cost-estimating bills of material, labor-hour estimates, statements of work, and design criteria.
2. Prepare Title II design engineering deliverables including calculations and analyses, construction specifications and drawings, and equipment specifications.
3. Effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team.
4. Routinely perform walkdowns in existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
5. Apply technical expertise and broad application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the electrical engineering field with a primary instrumentation and controls focus for equipment process control and monitoring.
6. Provide self-performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems through the application of established engineering practices, codes, and standards.
7. Provide field troubleshooting support for existing systems to inform design for corrective actions.
8. Prepare conduit/cable schedules, conduit/equipment plans, one-line diagrams, wiring/connection/schematic diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, various sections/elevations/details, calculations, datasheets, and construction specifications.
9. Develop control cabinet assembly drawings, system diagrams, and control logic for both batch and continuous processes using conventional analog instrumentation, distributed digital control systems, and PLCs/HMIs.
10. Develop process control system narratives, aid in the development of process software requirements, and provide input to Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

Required Qualifications

1. Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
2. Must have a minimum of 5 years of instrumentation and controls design engineering experience.
3. A minimum of 5 years’ experience (10 years preferred) with PLC and HMI programming for systems that include both analog and digital input and output.
4. Demonstrated experience utilizing the National Electrical Code, UL508A, and relevant ISA standards to design instrumentation and controls systems.
5. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening exam.

Preferred Qualifications

1. A Professional Engineer (PE) license.
2. 10 or more years of experience is highly preferred.

Location / Work Arrangement

1. Onsite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
2. Schedule is full-time, Monday–Friday, 40-hour week.
