The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) seeks an instructor to support the academic services of the Fashion Design and Merchandising program in the Family Consumer Sciences department. The instructor will teach 5-6 courses per year (18 credits), including both FDM core and required elective courses. The instructor will also advise FDM undergraduate majors in areas related to professional advancement in the field. (e.g., graduate studies; fashion design and merchandising occupations).



Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction (80%)

  1. Teach or co-teach 18-24 credit hour courses per year or teaching equivalent workload, especially large, introductory lecture/lab sections, in alignment with departmental needs and priorities.
  2. Use evidence-based pedagogy and high-impact practices (field experiences, service learning, industry projects, etc.).
  3. Provide service and contribute to Fashion Design and Merchandising curriculum and program development, including planning for a graduate program, and collaborating with community and industry partners.
  4. Advise and mentor undergraduates and contribute to student clubs.


Service (20%)

  1. Coordinate student training and supervision activities at CTAHR.
  2. Build and sustain partnerships with Hawai?i communities and industry partners to support in workforce development.
  3. Contribute to program assessment and continuous improvement; promotion, recruitment, and other activities in the FDM and serve on departmental/college/university committees.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing in Fashion design and merchandise disciplines or related field from an accredited university/institution by time of appointment.
  2. Teaching experience and evidence of strong teaching skills, both in person and online, and the ability to direct group discussions.
  3. Excellent communication and organizational skills; ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students, colleagues, and adaptability across a variety of learning/academic contexts.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. PhD from a college or university of recognized standing in Fashion design and merchandise, or in a related field.
  2. Experience in the following content areas/specialization: digital innovation in retailing, marketing, and promotion; AI applications; and big data analysis.
  3. College teaching experience; Demonstrated teaching ability and evidence of strong teaching skills at the undergraduate level.
  4. Experience working in the fashion industry (Work experience with digital retailing, marketing, and promotion is welcome.)
