May be for Leeward CC day, evening, or weekend offerings on- and off-campus, such as Leeward CC Waianae Moku and local high schools (pending background clearance), grant locations, or other satellite campuses.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, develop curriculum and teach Hawaiian Studies courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments, and perform other related work as assigned.
- Related work activities include, but are not limited to, advising and counseling students; responding to student inquiries in a timely manner; assisting in program, division, and campus-related student activities;
- Actively participate in faculty and administrative committees;
- Actively participate in program, division, college, and community/public service;
- Develop and maintain professional self-improvement plans;
- Collect data and prepare reports;
- Prepare, create, and revise Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and adjust pedagogy and curricula as appropriate to meet CLOs;
- Conduct course assessment and other evaluations of instruction based on CLOs, Course Evaluation Surveys, and adjust pedagogy and curricula as appropriate to improve outcomes;
- Independently plan, organize, and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments;
- Supports the development of a Native Hawaiian academic unit;
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Hawaiian Studies, OR
- Master’s Degree in Hawaiian Language with at least 9 credits of advanced and/or graduate level coursework focused on Native Hawaiian areas, OR
- Bachelor’s Degree in Hawaiian Studies and 3 years of related work experience, OR
- Master’s Degree with at least 15 credits of advanced and/or graduate level coursework or a research topic focused on Native Hawaiian areas, OR
- Master recognition in a specific area of Hawaiian knowledge as recognized by the Hawaiian community in that area, and 10 years of related work experience.
Minimum qualifications (degrees and credits) must be earned from regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary colleges and universities recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and met by the effective date of appointment.
Desirable Qualifications
- At least three years of full-time equivalent, or 75 credit hours, of experience teaching Hawaiian Studies at the community college level.
- Demonstrated success teaching diverse student populations at the community college level, as shown by positive student evaluations, peer assessments, and self-assessment.
- Experience teaching online courses or completion of online teaching training or certification, such as the Quality Matters (QM) Teaching Online Certificate or an equivalent from the University of Hawai?i system, including familiarity with learning management systems and instructional technology tools used in hybrid and online course delivery.
- Demonstrated understanding of Native Hawaiian culture, history, and contemporary issues, including the unique economic and political circumstances affecting Native Hawaiians and other Indigenous populations in Hawai?i today.
- Experience teaching or providing instruction in community-embedded, satellite, or rural campus settings, particularly those serving predominantly Native Hawaiian or economically underserved communities.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of the Hawaiian language.
- Demonstrated commitment to student accessibility, including maintaining consistent office hours, responding promptly to student inquiries, and engaging with students through multiple modes of communication, including in-person and online formats.
- Experience developing and revising curriculum in Hawaiian Studies, including program-level work such as building new academic units, establishing learning outcomes, or expanding programs within institutional structures.
- Experience assessing student learning outcomes and applying data to improve instruction.
- Active participation in professional development related to Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian language, Indigenous education, or related fields.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty colleagues within a department or program.
- Experience working with Native Hawaiians and their communities through service, engagement, or collaborative partnerships, including participation in formal community or public service roles, programs, or initiatives.
- Experience participating in campus activities, serving on faculty or administrative committees, and supporting student activities or co-curricular programming at the program, division, or campus level.
