Other Conditions: General funds to begin approximately Fall 2026, contingent on operational and program needs, actual staffing requirements, and availability of funds. Positions may be changed from 9-month to 11-month or 11-month to 9-month as operational needs are required.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Instruction
    1. Teach courses in hairdressing, nail technology, and skin/esthetics in accordance with program standards and industry practices.
    2. Develop, revise, and deliver curriculum in various instructional formats, including in-person, modularized, video-based, hybrid, and distance-education modalities.
    3. Prepare course materials, syllabi, lesson plans, assessments, and laboratory activities.
    4. Evaluate student performance, maintain accurate records, and submit required reports.
    5. Ensure safe and sanitary practices in all instructional settings, including proper use of equipment, chemicals, and salon procedures.
  2. Program Responsibilities
    1. Participate in program planning, assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement activities.
    2. Attend department meetings and serve in assigned departmental leadership or coordination roles.
    3. Engage in professional development to maintain currency in the cosmetology field and instructional best practices.
    4. Collaborate with campus units, community partners, and industry stakeholders to support student learning and workforce pathways.
  3. Student Support
    1. Maintain at least one office hour per week for each class taught.
    2. Provide academic support, advising, and guidance to students as appropriate.
    3. Be available for evening, weekend, and off-campus instructional assignments as required.
    4. Maintain a professional appearance and leadership presence that clearly distinguishes faculty from students.
  4. Compliance & Licensing
    1. Observe and implement all Hawai‘i State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology laws, rules, and regulations.
    2. Maintain current Hawai‘i Instructor and Beauty Operator (BEO) licenses; renewal is mandatory and the responsibility of the instructor. A signed wallet copy must be available at all times.
    3. Ensure compliance with college, UH, UHCC, and state policies and procedures.
  5. Administrative Support
    1. Complete related administrative support tasks for instructional duties such as in-service training, data collection, report preparation, and curriculum updates.
  6. Miscellaneous
    1. Maintain strict separation between college responsibilities and any external professional work to ensure program integrity and student-centered focus.
    2. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Associate Degree in Cosmetology plus five years related work experience and current State of Hawaii Board of Cosmetology Instructor Certification: or
  2. Fifteen (15) college credits plus seven years of related work experience including training and current State of Hawaii Board of Cosmetology Instructor Certification.


Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Experience teaching at the Community College level.
  2. Ability to work with community college students at a multi-cultural institution as an instructional team member.
  3. Experience in developing/modifying college courses.
  4. Experience In a facial and esthetic salon.
  5. Knowledge of the Pivot Point technique system.
  6. Documentation of advanced education in esthetics.
  7. Knowledge of cosmetology resources in the community.
