The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking apart-time Instructional Laboratory Technician (Fire Academy)(47.5%) in the Instruction division.


Salary Placement:
Salary placementwill be onRange 25of Classified Represented Salary Schedule B. ** Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3
($2,514.175 / $2,667.60 / $2,825.30 per month, as pro-rated for a 47.5% position) of this 20-step salary range.

Probationary periodfor new Classified employees is six months. Work yearis 12 calendar months. The normal workweekfor this position is 19 hours.Paid holiday, discretionary, vacation, personal necessity and sick time are provided, and will be pro-rated based on hours worked. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.

Position Description:
Reporting to and under the supervision of the Dean, Health Professions and Public Safety, with daily work direction provided by the Department Chair, performs a variety of technical and specialized duties related to the preparation, operation, maintenance, and safety compliance of Fire Technology instructional laboratories, training facilities, drill grounds, apparatus bays, equipment storage areas, and related instructional spaces. Provides technical assistance to faculty and students in support of Fire Technology curriculum. Performs clerical and inventory-related duties to support assigned programs and performs other related duties as assigned.Essential Duties:

  1. Assists in the operation and maintenance of Fire Technology instructional facilities, including drill grounds, equipment rooms, and designated training areas.
  2. Prepares, stages, inspects, and secures firefighting equipment and training materials for instructional demonstrations and practical skills exercises.
  3. Inspects, cleans, maintains, and stores firefighting tools and equipment including hoses, nozzles, ladders, SCBA units, turnout gear, rescue tools, ventilation equipment, and related apparatus.
  4. Assists faculty in setting up and breaking down instructional activities related to fire protection systems, hydraulics, hazardous materials, wildland fire behavior, fire investigation, tactics, and safety and survival.
  5. Maintains laboratory and training environments in a safe, clean, and orderly condition; ensures compliance with established safety standards and operational procedures.
  6. Performs routine inspections and minor maintenance of training equipment; coordinates major repairs through appropriate District procedures.
  7. Orders, receives, inventories, and maintains supplies, consumables, and instructional equipment; conducts vendor research and processes purchase requisitions.
  8. Maintains accurate records related to inventory, equipment inspections, maintenance logs, safety documentation, and program support activities.
  9. Assists students in the proper use and care of training equipment under faculty supervision and reinforces established safety practices.
  10. Provides work direction to college assistants and short-term hourly staff as assigned.
  11. Performs clerical duties including data entry, report preparation, responding to inquiries, maintaining files and records, and supporting departmental documentation.
  12. Assists with coordination of Fire Technology program activities, certification testing, and special training events as directed.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Demonstrated Knowledge and Abilities:

Position requires knowledge of:

  • Basic principles, procedures, and terminology used in fire service operations and emergency response training.
  • Firefighting tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE), including inspection and maintenance practices.
  • Fire protection systems, fire behavior, hydraulics, and hazardous materials fundamentals.
  • Health and safety practices applicable to fire training and public safety instructional environments.
  • Fundamentals of equipment inventory control, maintenance tracking, and recordkeeping.
  • Applicable safety standards and operational procedures related to Fire Technology programs.
  • Basic purchasing procedures and vendor coordination.
  • Oral and written communication skills.

Position requires ability to:
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain instructional training environments in advance of scheduled exercises.
  • Inspect, maintain, clean, and safely store firefighting and training equipment.
  • Follow and reinforce established safety procedures and operational guidelines.
  • Perform minor maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and tools.
  • Maintain accurate equipment logs, inspection records, and inventory documentation.
  • Use initiative and sound judgment in identifying equipment readiness and safety concerns.
  • Organize and prioritize work in anticipation of instructional needs and deadlines.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with faculty, students, staff, and public safety partners.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Work varied hours including evenings and weekends as required by academy or program schedule.

Minimum Requirements:

Experience:
Two (2) years of full-time equivalent responsible experience in fire service, emergency response, public safety training, or related technical instructional support environment.

Education:
Education equivalent to an Associate’s degree (60 semester units) from an accredited institution in Fire Technology, Fire Science, Public Safety, or a related field.Two (2) full-time equivalent years of direct experience in addition to that identified above may be substituted for each one year (30 semester units) of college.

License:
Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.

Desirable Qualifications:
• Firefighter I certification or equivalent recognized by the State of California.
• Experience supporting a Fire Academy, Fire Technology program, or public safety training environment.
• Experience inspecting, maintaining, and documenting service records for firefighting equipment including
self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), hoses, ladders, turnout gear, and related apparatus.
• Knowledge of State Fire Training (SFT) standards and documentation requirements.
• Completion of Incident Command System (ICS) coursework (e.g., ICS-100, ICS-200 or equivalent).
• Experience maintaining equipment inspection logs, safety compliance documentation, and inventory control systems.
• Experience coordinating skills testing, certification events, or scenario-based training activities.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
• Experience working in an educational or community college setting.
• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Technology, Fire Science, Public Safety, or related field.


Physical Characteristics:
Position requires sitting and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time, plus frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing ladders and staircases; lifting and stacking objects up to 50 pounds occasionally; frequently exerting 10 - 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move/handle material and objects; stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting and turning, bending at the waist; hand and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and related equipment; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; vision to read printed materials, computer monitor, depth perception, and use of near and far vision; exposure to toxic, pathogenic, or otherwise irritating substances and chemicals and requires the use of personal protective equipment; and travel from site-to-site.District Classified Employee Benefits:
This is a part-time position working 19 hours per week and is not eligible for District paid health and welfare benefits.
