Job Title: Instructional Designer & Systems Consultant (2 roles)
Job Location: Atlanta, GA (Cumberland/Vinings area) (initially mostly onsite; flexible to move to hybrid after
initial acclimation)
Job Duration: 2-year initial contract, expected to extend year over year beyond that based on mutual
agreement
POSITION SUMMARY
- This role supports the design, development, and continuous improvement of high quality digital learning experiences to advance the district’s professional learning goals. The Instructional Designer applies instructional design best practices and deep experience with the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to create engaging, accessible, and standards aligned learning content for district staff and educators.
- The position focuses on designing and maintaining Canvas based courses and learning resources, partnering with stakeholders to translate instructional goals into effective digital learning experiences. The Instructional Designer collaborates closely with the Professional Learning and Leadership Development team, subject matter experts, and district departments to support course development, instructional quality, and consistent use of Canvas to enhance professional learning across the district.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructure Ecosystem
- Support the implementation and ongoing optimization of the Instructure products Canvas, Canvas Catalog, Canvas Parchment (Credentials), Impact, and Studio.
- Troubleshoot and resolve platform and credentialing issues, developing solutions aligned to district needs.
- Define and guide strategy for use of the ecosystem tools aligned for district professional learning design and delivery.
- Design and maintain alignment across ecosystem components to ensure a cohesive and intuitive user experience.
- Configure and manage credential issuers to ensure badges are validated, verifiable, and aligned to district and external expectations.
- Utilize administrative access to diagnose issues, manage configurations, and support system-level functionality.
Instructional Design & Professional Learning Library
- Design and manage the district professional learning library (asynchronous and blended), which includes use of the Instructure Catalog tool.
- Define standards for high-quality asynchronous/hybrid learning and development processes.
- Establish templates and governance processes and procedures to ensure consistency and support across department courses and programs.
- Review and audit Canvas courses to improve consistency, accessibility, and learner experience including WCAG-aligned practices.
- Update and revise course content based on participant feedback or updated information.
- Apply advanced design techniques (e.g., HTML/CSS styling) to enhance user experience where appropriate.
- Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Professional Learning, and other departments to define learning objectives and build Canvas courses from ground up.
Instructure Programs & Pathways
- Support the design and scaling of district programs.
- Build and manage learning pathways across courses and experiences including stackable pathway design.
- Align courses, pathways, and credentials to defined competencies, programs, and employee growth.
- Design and implement a district badging/micro-credentialing system.
- Integrate badging into Canvas-based learning experiences that include configuration of automated triggers (e.g., completion, mastery).
Change Management & Communications
- Support Instructure-related change management by communicating timelines, expectations, best practices, and adoption guidance to stakeholders.
- Assess stakeholder readiness and support adoption by identifying needs, addressing barriers, and reinforcing effective use of the Instructure ecosystem.
- Collaborate with Professional Learning and Leadership Development and Communications teams to plan and execute coordinated rollout efforts, ensuring clear, consistent, and strategic planning and messaging.
- Participate in project planning, progress reporting, and risk identification related to Instructure initiatives.
Collaboration, Data, and Continuous Improvement
- Work closely with district system administrators, and vendors to ensure department needs are met during integrations and system changes.
- Review course usage, engagement, and training data to inform continuous improvement and next-phase support strategies.
- Stay current on Canvas updates, roadmap items, and emerging instructional technology and LMS best practices.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in education, or a related field.
- Experience in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Educational Leadership.
- Experience supporting or implementing a Learning Management System (Canvas preferred) in a K–12 or educational environment.
- Strong understanding of instructional design principles, digital learning best practices, and adult learning theory.
- Experience designing and facilitating professional learning for educators and professional staff.
- Instructure training experience.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, collaboration, and documentation skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Instructional Technology, or a related field.
- Prior experience leading LMS implementations or large-scale technology initiatives.
- Canvas certifications (or ability to obtain).
- Experience supporting K–12 professional learning structures and change management efforts.
- Demonstrated experience applying accessibility standards and UDL practices.
