Department Overview
The Injury Prevention Health Educator Flex position will provide support to the OHSU Doernbecher Injury Prevention team. This position will represent DCH Injury Prevention Program at OHSU Doernbecher, Hillsboro Medical Center, and through community outreach events including supporting community and professional trainings as scheduled. Support includes providing injury prevention education in inpatient and outpatient settings. The employee must be currently certified as a National Child Passenger Safety Technician and have a vast knowledge of a variety of Injury Prevention areas. Bilingual Spanish preferred but not required. Work as a team with the Doernbecher Injury Prevention team and volunteers to ensure the needs of all patients and visitors are met. Function/Duties of Position
OHSU/DCH Patient Support & Education
- Responsible for delivering injury prevention education, support and resources to OHSU/Doernbecher patients and their caregivers.
- Meet with caregivers and patients to provide IP education and resources.
- Attend inpatient unit discharge rounds to support a safe patient discharge.
- Document services provided in Patients Medical Record.
- Provide inpatient discharge planning education as appropriate.
- Track services and resources provided/offered to patients and caregivers.
- Support Infant Safety training and education to OHSU nursing staff, providers, and volunteers to ensure consistent messaging is provided to patients & caregivers.
- Support Car Seat Tolerance Screenings (CSTS) for patients and a safe and appropriate screening process.
- Support CSTS training to OHSU nursing staff and support CSTS training for caregivers.
- Collaborate with injury prevention inpatient team to ensure all patients’ needs are met to support a safer discharge.
- Provide monthly reports to Program Manager identifying successes and challenges.
- Provide injury prevention inpatient education and resources to DCH patients as necessary and in Spanish when appropriate.
Doernbecher Car Seat Outreach:
- Assist with and support Community car seat outreach events, providing outreach inspection station appointments for the community and assisting inthe organization, implementation and support of community car seat outreach events/fitting stations. Provide injury prevention education in primarylanguage (Spanish) to Latino communities when appropriate.
- Assist with the monitoring and tracking of all car seat inventory and activity.
- Mentor Community CPS technicians.
- Provide car seat education classes as necessary.
- Provide support for DCH Injury Prevention projects as needed and along with other duties as assigned by Program Manager which will support the mission and vision of the DCH Injury Prevention Program.
Safety Resource Center Support
- Work directly with Injury Prevention - Safety Resource Center teams to provide organizational support for outreach events in the community.
- Coordinate and represent the OHSU Doernbecher Tom Sargent Safety Resource Center and Braner Family Safety Resource Center at communityoutreach events and provide support at the DCH injury prevention team.Provide injury prevention education to Latino community in Spanish whenappropriate.
- Assist with managing resource inventory, perform community car seat inspections through the Doernbecher Car Seat Inspection Station, andcomplete necessary reports.
- Work as a team with injury prevention staff, volunteers, and partners to ensure the needs of all visitors are met.
- Support the vision, mission & values of OHSU and the Doernbecher injury prevention team.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in writing, public relations, communications, health education/promotion or public health. Significant experience as a community education specialist will be considered in lieu of bachelor degree.
1 year experience with teaching and public speaking.
1 year experience in provision of community/health education.
Knowledge and experience in development of online resources and programs including webinars and other training methodologies.
- National CPS certification
Preferred Qualifications
- National Child Passenger Safety Technician certification;
- 2 yrs experience as actively involved in community.
- 2 yr. Customer service experience, experience in Child Injury Prevention
- CPS Enrichment Training “Safe Travel for All Children”
- Active participate in Injury Prevention activities in the community.
- Certified Child Passenger technician, Special Needs Transportation trained, certified instructor Bilingual Spanish preferred
Additional Details
This employee will be based at the Doernbecher Injury Prevention Program at OHSU. It will be a 0.0 Flex FTE position and may require off-site travel throughout State of Oregon. Will require some evening and weekend work, within weekly hour limits. Ability to stand for 4 continuous hours. On-call work asscheduled.
