Under the general direction from the Recreation Superintendent, the Ice Center and Pool Maintenance Technician is responsible for the daily operational maintenance, custodial and grounds tasks for the ice arena, outdoor swimming pool and Goerke Park amenities. Position performs cleanup and maintenance of outdoor and indoor recreation facilities and parks.

Position requires skilled and manual labor for building, equipment, grounds and operational maintenance duties. Position works either independently or collectively depending upon the supervisor’s instructions.
  1. Maintains a preventive maintenance schedule for buildings, maintenance equipment, and building systems, with strict adherence to that schedule. Responsible for the safe operation of maintenance machinery and appliances.
  2. Operates pick-up trucks, tractors, large and small mowers and other powered grounds equipment. Performs janitorial work in indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and areas.
  3. Responsible for general building maintenance, repairs and cleanliness.
  4. Inventory and purchase equipment and supplies needed with supervisor’s approval.
  5. Investigate and provide skilled mechanical repairs in maintaining ice making machine, electrical circuits, motors, controls, lighting fixtures, fans, faucets, sinks, toilets, air handlers, dehumidifiers, heater, pool chemical feeder, filtration systems, water chemistry/balance.
  6. Conducts the operation (including start-up and shut-down) and maintenance of building systems, including but not limited to fire protection and sprinkler systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water, power and electricity, phone system, and sewer.
  7. Performs a variety of custodial tasks typical of public buildings and indoor/outdoor facilities. Tasks include but are not limited to: cleaning floors, remove and empty trash, clean windows, walls, ceilings and light fixtures, clean sinks, lavatories and urinals in restrooms.
  8. Provides work directions and training to fulltime/seasonal employees. To include but not limited to ice resurfacing and skate sharpening.
  9. Responsible for cleaning and care of assigned equipment.
  10. Reports needed repairs or malfunction of equipment to supervisor.
  11. Performs inspections and repairs and preventive maintenance to park facilities and park related equipment including: mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and electrical
  12. Performs turf management operations including but not limited to mowing, mulching and trimming of green spaces.
  13. Collects refuse and fugitive trash at outdoor recreation areas and at park facilities
  14. Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with peers, supervisor, seasonal employees and the general public.
  15. Assisting the public as needed, while conveying the mission of the City of Stevens Point in a positive and professional manner.
  16. Performs snow and ice control and removal procedures from parking lots, walkways and park roads. Including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals, loading trucks, hauling snow and shoveling sidewalks.
  17. Prepares for and set ups equipment and materials for events, athletic contests and other special user groups.
  18. Perform synthetic turf maintenance for Goerke Field and other locations as assigned.
  19. Attends continuing education classes as directed by supervisor.
  20. Other work as assigned for the efficient operation of the department.
  1. Associates degree in building maintenance or related field; or equivalent work experience required. Three (3) to five (5) years maintenance experience in an ice arena, pool or related facility preferred.
  2. Possession of a valid Commercial Driving License (CDL) issued by the State of Wisconsin or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire required.
  3. Aquatic Facilities Operator or Certified Pool Operator certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, with a safe driving record.
  4. Certified Ice Technician Certificate or the ability to begin the certification program within the first 12 months of employment and gain full certification within 24 months of hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must work mandatory, prescheduled overtime shifts. Employees work a rotating Saturday and Sunday morning schedule (approximately every fifth weekend) May through October; and a rotating Saturday morning schedule (approximately every third weekend) November through February.
  2. Must work mandatory, prescheduled overtime athletic events.
  3. Must be available to work day or night hours and weekends with minimal notice.
  4. Must be able to coordinate and accomplish service calls seven days a week.
  5. Must be able to perform the responsibilities of the position, which require the use of both hands.
  6. Performance of tasks may involve exposure to machinery and its moving parts as well as chemicals, HVAC units, sprinkler systems and other building mechanical systems.
  7. Must be able to sit to drive and operate continuously 6 hours per day.
  8. Must be able to operate hand controls up to 6 hours per day.
  9. Frequent climbing, must be able to work at heights above 12 feet.
  10. Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 86 pounds, with a maximum lift requirement of 98 pounds.
  11. Must be able to occasionally exert push and pull forces up to 45 pounds, with a maximum push requirement of 61 pounds and pull of 144 pounds.
  12. Must be able to occasionally perform gripping up to 26 pounds and pinching up to 6 pounds including fine motor tasks such as starting nuts on bolts when changing blades.
  13. Frequently standing and walking throughout the work shift.
  14. Occasional sitting, bending, reaching, and performing low-level and elevated activities.
  15. Frequent stair climbing, especially in facilities with multiple levels, such as arenas with bleachers and locker rooms.
  16. Must be able to occasionally maintain hand coordination for tool use and equipment operation.
  17. Ability to work both at ground level and in elevated positions as needed.
  18. Ability to perform physical tasks in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments.
  19. Work is seasonal and varies significantly throughout the year.
  20. Summer: Approximately 90% of work is performed outdoors (e.g., maintaining community pool facilities).
  21. Winter: Approximately 80% of work is performed indoors, primarily in arena and ice maintenance settings, with the majority of indoor environments being temperature-controlled.

  3. Working knowledge in ice facility operation including operating refrigeration equipment and making ice and maintaining outdoor pool operations.
  4. Ability to maintain written and computer-generated reports, needs and forms.
  5. Good working knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair mechanical equipment in the following areas: ice making machine, compressors, ice edger, furnaces, water heater, pumps, exhaust fans, air conditioning, plumbing equipment, dehumidifiers, chemical feeders, filtration system and water chemistry/balance.
  6. Skill in the use of common tools, power tools and various equipment. Ability to perform carpentry and trades work and skills.
  7. Knowledge on operation of dump truck, bucket truck, garbage truck, snow removal equipment, loader and heavy equipment.
  8. Ability to maintain a cooperative and understanding work relationship with the supervisor, seasonal employees and general public.
