POSITION SUMMARY

This position is in the Hourly Trading group within the Gas Supply and Energy Trading department in the Commercial Operations organization. This role will be responsible for the daily administration of long-term energy wholesale contracts, monitoring hourly forecasts, ensuring load obligations are met, and optimizing our transmission assets on behalf of Southern Company’s Operating Companies. Key responsibilities include energy scheduling and tagging activities, transmission procurement, transaction entry and checkout, billing support, and general assistance to energy traders. This position requires the ability to perform detailed transactional work under strict deadlines. It entails working in an exciting, fast-paced trading floor environment where the successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain insight into a broad spectrum of the business, including unit commitment, economic dispatch, fleet and gas operations, energy trading, risk management, asset management, transmission, and billing.  

 

Hourly Trading is a 24x7x365 function. This position is part of a 6-person team and will be required to work rotating 12 hour shifts which includes nights, weekends, and holidays. Over a typical 6-week rotation this position only works a total of 23 days compared to traditional jobs which work a total of 30 days over the same period. Below is an example of the current shift schedule.

·       Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday (Day Shift 5 AM – 5 PM)

·       Week 2: Wednesday & Thursday (Day Shift 5 AM – 5 PM)

·       Week 3: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday (T Shift [40 hours] – 8 hours each day)

·       Week 4: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday (Night Shift 5 PM – 5 AM)

·       Week 5: Wednesday & Thursday (Night Shift 5 PM – 5 AM)

·       Week 6: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday (R Shift [32 hours] – 8 hours each day)

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

**PLEASE NOTE** This is an entry level position in the Gas Supply and Energy Trading department in Commercial Operations. Therefore, there are no required qualifications or experience to apply for this position. The following is a list of preferred traits:


Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a course of study that demonstrates strong analytical and technical skills such as Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Business etc. is desired but not required
  • An MBA or advanced degree in these areas or a related field is a plus
  • NERC System Operator Certification is a plus


Experience:

  • Experience working in the energy trading field is a plus
  • Experience working rotating shifts is a plus
  • Experience working in a transmission control center, distribution control center, bulk power operations, or generating plant is a plus


Skills:

  • Strong quantitative, problem solving, and communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Proficiency with Windows based software applications (e.g. MS Office Suite), namely MS Excel, MS Word, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to initiate and manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines
  • Possess sound judgment in making decisions under tight time constraints
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment
  • Must be self-directed with strong initiative and dependability
  • Must be able to use discretion concerning sensitive, confidential, and proprietary information
  • Must have strong customer service orientation and be effective interacting with both internal and external customers


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role, the selected candidate will provide support for the real-time administration of multiple wholesale energy contracts and the commercial transactions. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Scheduling transactions, troubleshooting customer/supplier transaction issues
  • Scheduling energy flows to ensure load/generation balancing
  • Providing transmission and RTO ramp availability reporting and procurement support
  • Interfacing with billing function to help process changes and resolve issues arising from transaction activity
  • Providing general support for energy trading products and services
  • Analyzing data and issues in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
  • Maintaining a thorough understanding of the operational aspects of energy trading and the applicable transmission tariffs
