Histotechnician, First Shift, Derm Pathology Department 

UC Health is hiring a full-time Histotechnician for the dermatology pathology department for first shift at UC Health. 

The Histotechnician performs routine histopathological tests in a clinical laboratory for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease.

  • Engages in population appropriate communication.
  • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
  • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
  • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
  • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Perform routine paraffin sections of surgical and autopsy tissue for microscopic examination in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. 
  • Prepare equipment and reagents for processing, embedding, microtome cutting and mounting of tissue; perform routine and special staining techniques.
  • Label, file, discard and maintain records of tissue samples of containers, tissue processing cassettes, final paraffin bloods and slides.
  • Label and record slides of specimens received; provide specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist. 
  • Obtain and log specimens from the operating rooms and other areas as required. 
  • Perform frozen cytostat sectioning. 
  • Perform various Quality Control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations. 
  • Utilize various hospital information systems and software, including Electronic Medical Records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
