Operates heavy equipment such as the slope mower, backhoe, and motor grader in roadside and right -of way vegetation management operations. Operates lowboy truck tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction repairs. Performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as removing fallen trees from roadway, cutting dead trees from right-of-way, and low hanging limbs over roadway. May assist with directing mowing and right-of-way clearing operations. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) and the maintenance request and complaint forms. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, including extended hours and/or 12-hour shifts. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment life to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Performs other related duties as assigned.
One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.
