The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring multiple Transportation Generalist positions which May be located at any of the following Metro Truck Station locations: Chaska, Golden Valley, Golden Valley Traffic Control/Graffiti, and Jordan.

The Transportation Generalist maintains and reconstructs roadways; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair culvert cleaning; guardrail repair; and maintains roadsides. In addition, this position will perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operate tractor mowers and small rollers; remove objects from roadways; set up traffic controls in high volume traffic and work associated with accidents, spill cleanup, rut repair, dead deer, etc. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performing landscaping duties on roadside (chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding)
  • Conducting rest area maintenance to wayside rests and scale areas (building and grounds maintenance, vegetation control, and parking surface repairs)
  • Driving and operating a variety of heavy equipment to perform snow and ice duties, maintaining roadways for snow and ice control which includes: removing snow from roadways and shoulders; applying anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removing frozen ice and materials from culverts; performing night or dawn patrols; preparing and inspecting winter equipment, such as snowplow equipment, and cutting edges and sanders.


The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring multiple Transportation Associate positions which May be located at any of the following Metro Truck Station locations: Camden Days (Minneapolis), Cedar Nights (Richfield), Chaska, Golden Valley, Golden Valley Traffic Control/Graffiti, Maryland Nights (St. Paul), and Mendota Nights (St. Paul).

The Transportation Associate is a trainee position with a 12-month probationary period. This position exists to learn to perform road surface maintenance and snow and ice control activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe, clear and in good repair according to MnDOT standards; and performs related work as required.

The days of work, shift, normal and holiday work hours will vary depending on the requirement of each individual truck station (i.e., day shift, evening shift, overnights, or night shift as well as weekdays and weekends). Hours will include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations and seasonal assignments. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one hour of being called.


Shift Differential

The shift differential for employees working on assigned shifts which begin before 6:00 A.M. or which end at or after 6:00 P.M. shall be two dollars and twenty-five cents ($2.25) per hour for all hours worked before 6:00 A.M. or after 6:00 P.M. on that shift. Such shift differential shall be in addition to the employee's regular rate of pay and shall be included in all payroll calculations but shall not apply during periods of paid leave. An employee who requests and is approved by their supervisor to work before 6 A.M. or after 6 P.M. shall not be eligible for the shift differential.


Night Maintenance Premium Pay

Maintenance employees working night shifts of durations lasting three (3) months or more, covered by this agreement, shall receive Night Premium Pay of $2.00/hour for all shifts which start between 7:00 P.M. and 12:00 A.M. This will apply to all hours for the scheduled straight time shift. Such premium pay shall be in addition to the employee's hourly rate of pay, and any shift differential the employee would otherwise be entitled to. The premium pay shall be included in all payroll calculations for shifts actually worked, but shall not apply during periods of paid leave, or in calculations of back-pay.


Transportation Generalist Minimum Qualifications:

The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:

  • A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction AND a tanker endorsement. Please list type of CDL (A or B) on resume.

AND

  • One (1) year of experience performing activities in any of the following: snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment or farm experience).

OR

  • (Education): Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Transportation Associate Minimum Qualifications:

  • A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction AND a tanker endorsement (MUST BE LISTED ON RESUME).

Successful candidates for both the Transportation Generalist and Transportation Associate positions will be required to pass a computerized ACT math and reading test as part of the hiring contingencies. The required passing score for the math portion is a level 3 or higher and the reading portion is a level 4 or higher.
