MajorDuties

  • Removes, disassembles overhauls, modifies, adjusts, and repairs, engines, transmissions, or sub-assemblies in accordance with the proper procedures and specifications. Reassembles engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies, makes adjustments, tests and reinstalls in vehicles and equipment. Determines serviceability by operational driving test. Develop or improvise methods, alter parts, and make repairs in the absence of technical guidelines. Modify parts to fit, or improvises modifications to equipment to correct recurring malfunctions. Cleans, tests, and repairs radiators/oil coolers and associated parts. Test, services, and repairs vehicle air conditioning systems following manufacturers and environmental guidelines. Replaces or repairs tires, tubes and balances wheel assemblies. Prepares, maintains and submits applicable maintenance work orders for man-hour and data collection accounting, to include completing forms to reflect work performed or delayed and parts and maintenance required. Participates as OJT Instructor in the vehicle maintenance area. Conducts instructional classes on methods and procedures of operation and maintenance concerning all aspects of vehicle repairs and assigned shop maintenance support equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics): Skill in the diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying of heavy mobile equipment, systems, and vehicles. Thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of heavy duty systems, assemblies, and parts, including such major systems as diesel, multifuel, and gasoline engines, including supercharged and turbocharged engines. Knowledgeable of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems which have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of mechanical systems. Thorough knowledge of hydraulic systems and their controls. Basic electronic knowledge sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors and circuit boards.

Indefinite employment is defined as an excepted appointment with indefinite time limitations and is used when the appointment is expected to extend beyond one year. Should the need for the indefinite time limitations placed on this position no longer exist, the indefinite appointment could be converted to permanent action without further competition and you may be required to serve a trial period upon conversion.
