An Overview

A Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy, multi-purpose equipment with complex controls requiring a high degree of skill and manipulative ability. This role requires advanced proficiency in equipment operation, strong situational awareness, and a commitment to safety, efficiency, and accountability in all work performed. Work involves performing complex tasks such as grading, material handling, and refuse collection operations with precision and minimal error, while ensuring the safe and efficient progression of operations. Operators are expected to identify hazards, adapt to changing work conditions, and exercise sound judgment in dynamic environments.


Standard procedures are followed; however, employees in this class are expected to demonstrate initiative, independent decision-making, and ownership of assigned responsibilities. Work is inspected periodically for safety, quality, and efficiency. This class differs from that of Equipment Operator II in the higher degree of skill required, the complexity of tasks performed, and the greater level of accountability due to the potential impact of errors on safety, equipment, and operations.


Supervision may be exercised over Laborers I, II and III and/or Equipment Operators I and II, including providing guidance, training, and reinforcing safe work practices. Tasks are performed under the general supervision of a Labor Supervisor or a Superintendent.

The Opportunity

  • Operates a refuse collection front load truck for commercial refuse collection.
  • Operates knuckle-boom loader typically used for loading heavy materials such as large metal items or bulk tree limbs.
  • Operates Roll-Off trucks and hauls containers accordingly,
  • Operates rear-load refuse collection trucks in residential or public space routes, including coordinating safe and efficient collection activities with a two-person crew.
  • Leads and works alongside assigned crew members to ensure routes are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established standards, including providing direction, monitoring performance, and reinforcing safe work practices.
  • May require participating as a Refuse Collector or Swing operator.
  • Assists Assistant Superintendents in performance of daily program monitoring duties and supports operational oversight.
  • Fills in for Assistant Superintendent as needed, demonstrating leadership, accountability, and sound decision-making.
  • Performs thorough pre- and post-operation equipment inspections; keeps equipment clean, identifies deficiencies, and reports malfunctions or safety concerns promptly; performs minor repairs as appropriate.
  • Operates equipment safely and efficiently under varying conditions, including weather, traffic, and site constraints.
  • Trains and mentors subordinates in proper equipment operation, safety procedures, and work standards.

The Ideal Candidate

High School Diploma or GED; three years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment; one year of supervisory experience; thorough knowledge of the proper methods of transporting heavy loads and load limits, traffic safety rules and accident prevention practices; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Skills in the operation of heavy multi-purpose motor equipment under all types of weather conditions.

Additional Requirements: Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the proper endorsements in the state of residency.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered as an ideal candidate, one must possess two (2) years of experience in the operation of front load trucks for commercial refuse collection, roll-off container trucks, knuckle-boom loaders and rear loaders along with demonstrated experience in safe operations, mentoring others, and supporting efficient workflow in solid waste operations

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to drug testing, criminal background.

6:30am - 3:00pm (Winter)
5:30am - 2:00pm (Summer)
