The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for skilled work in the operation of special motorized equipment in construction and maintenance activities.
  • Performs a variety of manual tasks such as: cleaning sewers, drainage ditches and drains, digging holes, trenches and excavations, fence installations, patching holes, janitorial duties, landscaping and a variety of other duties. Right-of-way maintenance, cemetery maintenance, community gardens, street sweeping, tree maintenance, special events, and road closures, passive parks and fountains.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as track-mounted crane, large trucks, concrete mixers, power shovel, drag line, farm type tractor used door roadway cleaning, bulldozer, large excavator, street sweeper and/or backhoe/frontend loader for a variety of construction and demolition related duties.
  • Responsible for a variety of tasks including loading materials, pouring concrete, digging ditches, pipe laying, street sweeping, basin cleaning, scraping, grading, lowering, lifting, demolition etc.
  • Performs physical tasks such as loading supplies and cleaning equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance servicing and repairs on equipment, replacing and adjusting parts.
  • Cleans and maintains the department's materials and equipment.
  • Completes special projects and performs other miscellaneous duties as required by management.
The Heavy Equipment Operator should possess, at minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent, with at least (3) years' experience in operating heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Possession of Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or attainment of such within six (6) months of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Limited supervision of service workers and community service volunteers.
  • Knowledge of the operation and care of such heavy equipment as cranes, power shovel, concrete mixer, street sweeper, backhoe or related heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to equipment operation.
  • Ability to understand and follow quickly and accurately written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in the safe operation and servicing of specialized heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of equipment utilizing hydraulic controls.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and with members of the general public.
  • Ability to pass vision test for night driving
