THIS POSTING IS FOR TWO (2) VACANCIES.

Under close supervision, performs preventive maintenance and repairs to County vehicles, heavy and light equipment, and public safety vehicles to ensure the availability of safe and reliable transportation and equipment operation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, physical requirements, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.)Performs diagnosis of vehicle and equipment performance and operations utilizing a variety of testing equipment; conducts tests on vehicle electrical systems; hydraulic systems; performs a variety of breakdown and scheduled maintenance, repairs and overhauls to transmissions, engines, drive trains, and other operating systems; performs preventive maintenance, including fluid and filter changes; may perform collision damage repairs, painting and bodywork, brake, and exhaust system repairs.

Operates fuel and/or service trucks for servicing equipment that is away from shop.

Prepares records and work order history on vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance activity; orders parts; researches vehicle and part specifications and related information; performs field service calls and retrieval of disabled vehicles. May be called upon to work during emergency weather conditions during and after normal work hours. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of repair and service manuals and other documentation for maintenance of vehicles and various equipment; the usage and operation of various diagnostic equipment and tools.
Knowledge of Hamilton County work order system, County policies and procedures.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and County codes and regulations relating to vehicle and workplace safety.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and County codes and regulations pertaining to transporting hazardous materials.
Knowledge of County geography, facilities, and work sites.
Skill in testing and diagnosing problems relating to vehicle and equipment operational performance.
Skill in reading, interpreting, understanding, and applying applicable Federal and State rules and regulations, Hamilton County Policies and Procedures.
Skill in working with a variety of tools and equipment; service manuals, vehicle, and equipment specifications.
Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with the public, department staff, service/parts vendors, and other County departments.
Skill in welding with gas, stick, and mig welders.
Skill in effectively communicating in both oral and written form.

The equivalent of a high school diploma, plus a minimum of at least three (3) years of direct work experience in heavy equipment and diesel engine maintenance. A valid driver’s license is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbent shall furnish all hand tools needed to perform duties of a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Hamilton County will provide specialty tools. A valid driver’s license is required.

This position is deemed essential/situational during inclement weather situations and must report to or remain at work, even when administrative closings are announced, as determined by the Department Head.

Prior to operating a County-owned vehicle, all employees are required to complete the HC Defensive Driving course and/or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) provided at the department level.

SAFETY SENSITIVE:

This position has been identified as “safety sensitive” under the definition of 49 CFR Part 40-Department of Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Policy. This position will be subject to drug and alcohol testing for the following: 1) post offer pre-employment 2) when there is reasonable cause 3) after an on-the-job accident or contributing to an accident 4) on a random basis 5) prior to return to duty after suspension and/or 6) as follow-up. This is additional and also subject to the Rules and Regulations of The Employee Handbook.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work requires moderate physical effort involving intermittent walking, standing sitting and driving. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust while performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to hot, cold, dry, wet, dusty, muddy, windy, and/or humid conditions. The employee frequently works near moving equipment, mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to vibrations, jostling, and bouncing. The employee may work in high, precarious places and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
