Boulder CountyPublic HealthDepartment is seeking to hire a Healthy Futures Youth Coalition Youth Advisor.The Healthy Futures Youth Coalition (HFYC) Youth Advisor is part of a team that includes two Youth Advisors, the Healthy Futures Coalition (HFC) Program Specialist, and AmeriCorps VISTA members. HFYC Youth Advisors’ main role is to help plan and lead HFYC meetings (youth-only). HFYC Youth Advisors will use learning guides to help lead activities and support group discussions. They also serve on the Healthy Futures Coalition Steering Committee which is a small group of youth and adults who help guide the coalition, give feedback, plan HFC (youth and adult) meetings, and keep things on track. HFYC meetings take place twice a month and focus on building advocacy and community leadership skills to address youth substance use and mental health in the community. Healthy Futures Coalition meetings happen four times a year and bring youth and adults together to share ideas, learn from each other, and plan prevention strategies.

HFYC Youth Advisors also help manage the Boulder County Youth Calendar, which highlights free, substance-free activities for young people. They also help plan and create posts for the HFYC Instagram account. A key part of the HFYC Youth Advisor role is reducing stigma around substance use; HFYC Youth Advisors learn and share ways to talk about substance use in a supportive, non-judgmental way. They may work on projects focused on youth wellness and substance use prevention and provide feedback on policies and practices that affect young people. HFYC Youth Advisors collaborate with Youth Advisors from other Boulder County Public Health programs, attend community events, and participate in statewide conferences. These opportunities help youth advisors build leadership skills, learn new prevention strategies, and connect with other youth leaders.

This is a year-round position which will start promptly.

Youth Advisors will work in a hybrid format (both virtually and in-person). In-person meetings may take place at three County building locations:
  • Sundquist Building located at 3482 Broadway in Boulder, CO
  • St. Vrain Community Hub located at 515 Coffman St. in Longmont, CO
  • Southeast Community Hub located at 1755 S. Public Rd. in Lafayette, CO
This is an hourly, non-benefitedposition that will work3-8 hours per week, usually Monday through Friday in the afternoon or evenings. On average, the role requires about 3–5 hours per week, and weeks with more than 6 hours of work are uncommon. The position requires availability during the summer, after school, in the evenings, and occasionally on weekends. Current required availability includes Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00–8:30 p.m. and one Thursday per month from 4:00–5:00 p.m. (these times may change based on team needs and scheduling). Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt(eligible for overtime).

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $25.00Hourly

  1. Plan and lead Healthy Futures Youth Coalition meetings with the HFC Program Specialist and AmeriCorps VISTAs
  2. Create promotional flyers, presentation slides, and facilitator guides for HFYC meetings using applications such as Canva, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office
  3. Participate in all required training and conferences
  4. Support the recruitment of new HFYC members
  5. Help manage the Boulder County Youth Calendar
  6. Plan and design content for the HFYC Instagram account
  7. Represent HFYC at meetings, community events, schools, youth serving organizations, and with community partners as needed
  8. Attend weekly HFYC Team meetings
  9. Participate on the HFC Steering Committee
  10. Advocate for youth substance use prevention, harm reduction, and mental health promotion within Boulder County Public Health and the community
  11. Help develop resources and participate in outreach and education efforts that support youth substance use prevention, reduce stigma, and promote youth mental health and wellbeing
  12. Collaborate with other Boulder County Youth Advisors, youth leadership groups, and adult partners
  13. Performs related work, as required
  14. May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of:

  • Current enrollment in high school or a GED program, or a recent high school/GED graduation

BACKGROUND CHECK& FINGERPRINTING:

  • For applicants age 18 or older, a job offer is contingent upon passing a background check with fingerprinting. A criminal background does not automatically disqualify applicants unless the charge is related to child safety or welfare.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be between the ages of 15-20 at the time of hire
  • Youth Advisors are responsible for getting to work and attending in-person meetings or events using their own transportation or public transit - an EcoPass is provided
  • Must be available for all HFC and HFYC meetings (typically two to three Wednesday evenings per month from 5:30–8:30 p.m., subject to change), except in cases of illness or emergency

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

  • Ability to work remotely, come into the office, and attend in-person community events - a laptop can be provided if needed
  • Interest in learning meeting planning, presenting, group facilitation, and public speaking
  • Interest in creating social media content
  • Excitement about holding a leadership role and developing leadership skills
  • Time management and communication skills, with willingness to continue building these skills
  • Willingness to learn how to use applications such as Canva, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office
