Job Description

The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining and caring for school district grounds to ensure safe, attractive, and functional outdoor environments for students, staff, and the community. This position performs landscaping, gardening, athletic field preparation, and pest control activities across district properties.

Job Responsibilities
  • Maintain school grounds, including lawns, landscaped areas, walkways, parking areas, and athletic fields.
  • Set up, line, and prepare athletic fields for practices, games, and special events, including placement of goals, bases, nets, field markers, and related equipment.
  • Perform routine athletic field maintenance, including mowing patterns, turf care, field leveling, irrigation support, and seasonal preparation.
  • Perform general gardening and landscaping tasks such as planting, fertilizing, watering, mowing, edging, aerating, and trimming trees and shrubs.
  • Apply pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in accordance with district policies, safety procedures, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain records related to pesticide application as required and report any issues or safety concerns.
  • Operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment, including mowers, edgers, trimmers, blowers, line stripers, and irrigation systems.
  • Assist with installation, operation, and maintenance of irrigation and watering systems.
  • Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on grounds and athletic field equipment.
  • Follow all safety protocols and district policies to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Identify and report hazards, damaged equipment, or unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks as required.

 

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of landscaping, plant care, and athletic field maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe pesticide and herbicide application practices.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required pesticide applicator certification or license, if applicable.
  • Ability to safely operate grounds and field maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and perform sustained physical labor.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions
  • Frequent outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Physical labor including lifting, bending, kneeling, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Exposure to noise, machinery, chemicals, and outdoor elements, with appropriate safety equipment provided.
