Under the immediate supervision of a Groundskeeper Supervisor or higher-level officer, this is manual laboring work in preparing and maintaining a public recreational area.
An employee in this class maintains the recreational area in acceptable condition at all times. Work involves such maintenance activities as cutting grass and brush, cleaning the area, and erecting and maintaining fences. An employee also marks court boundaries under varying degrees of supervision, depending upon the technical nature of the given court or field in question. Some guidance is exercised over the public in obtaining adherence to rules and regulations governing attire and conduct of others using the area. Cuts grass and brush, and trims trees so that they do not interfere with the playing area, and from walkways, parking lots, and entrances during rainy months and so that proper appearance of the area is maintained.
Removes litter, debris, and hazardous materials from the grounds to ensure safety and cleanliness.
Operates and maintains landscaping equipment such as weed eaters, mowers, edgers, leaf blowers, and trimmers.
Marks and maintains court and field boundaries for sports such as tennis, basketball, baseball, and softball, using appropriate tools (e.g., spade, drag), under varying degrees of supervision depending on the technical requirements of the work involved.
Provides assistance with the repair and maintenance of fences and other barriers enclosing the area.
Monitors, in a general fashion, the use of the area, especially from the standpoint of ensuring compliance with rules and regulations governing the attire and conduct of others using the area.
Performs a variety of landscaping tasks, including watering lawns, flower beds, and other landscaped areas; preparing soil and planting trees, shrubs, and flowers; conducting seasonal planting and pruning; and, under supervision, applying fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides to promote healthy vegetation and control weeds or pests.
Examines playground equipment, benches, and other amenities for damage or safety issues and reports concerns to supervisors.
Provides assistance as needed with setting up and breaking down for events and recreational activities held within the area.
Performs other related work as assigned.
