INTERVIEWS WILL BE CONDUCTED ON JUNE 5, 2026Groundskeeper I: $17.32 - $21.06 /hr.Groundskeeper II: $19.14 - $23.27 /hr.Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the improvement, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of County grounds, including parks, park and recreation facilities and buildings, sports fields, open spaces, landscapes, playgrounds and equipment, irrigation systems and controllers, and weed abatement; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power driven equipment; and performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives direct or general supervision from assigned management and supervisory staff. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May provide technical and functional direction to assigned staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSGroundskeeper I: This is the entry-level class in the groundskeeping series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with little to no groundskeeping experience learn Countyinfrastructure, systems, and facilities, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. This classification is flexibly staffed with Groundskeeper II, and incumbents normally advance to the higher level after gaining experience and achieving proficiency which meet the requirements for Groundskeeper II.
Groundskeeper II: This is the full journey-level class in the groundskeeping series that performs the full range of duties required to ensure that County grounds, infrastructure, and facilities to which assigned are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned facilities, parks, and systems. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Incumbents may act as a lead worker to seasonal or temporary helpers, including work release workers.

- Inspects assigned County grounds and facilities for maintenance needs and safety concerns.
- Estimates quantities needed and recommends selection of plans for annual or permanent planting areas.
- Performs turf maintenance duties, including watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, aerating, renovating, and fertilizing turf.
- Performs shrub and flower bed maintenance, including planting, watering, fertilizing, and maintaining landscaped areas such as bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs; performs weed abatement using a chemical sprayer; installs sod and/or sows grass seed.
- Trims and prunes bushes, trees, and shrubs to provide clearance of sidewalks and signs, as well as to ensure the continued health of the bush, tree, or shrub.
- Mows and edges lawns, ball fields, and other turf.
- Removes fallen trees, stumps, fallen limbs, and related debris resulting from storm damage and general conditions.
- Irrigates lawns and other planted areas using manual and automatic irrigation devices. Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the irrigation system; changes and adjust heads; maintains controllers; participates in performing irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.
- Identifies and corrects irrigation, disease, and other plant problems.
- Paints park buildings and other facilities; removes graffiti in parks and in other areas; power-washes hard surfaces.
- Rakes leaves and clears debris from walkways, fields, and other facilities.
- Clears snow from sidewalks and applies sand or salt as needed.
- Cleans and maintains restrooms; stocks restrooms with necessary supplies; repairs toilets, urinals, and faucets as needed.
- Assists in the set-up and removal of equipment and facilities needed for special events.
- Monitors and adjusts all park water usage for maximum water conservation.
- Operates and maintains specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment and hand and power tools related to the landscaping, maintenance, and repair of County parks and related facilities, including trucks, lawn mowers, weed eater, edger, blower, hedge trimmer, etc.
- Installs, adjusts, and repairs sprinkler systems and related plumbing, including valves, valve heads, time clocks, piping, etc.; assists in other plumbing repairs as needed.
- Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
- Maintains public facilities, shop, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
- Maintains accurate logs, reports, and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
- Attends training, meetings, workshops, etc., as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
- Interacts with and provides information for public and County workers.
- Receives and acts upon complaints, referrals, and concerns from the public; responds to and performs work in emergency situations as required.
- Performs related duties as required.
Groundskeeper II: (In addition to the above)
- Provides training, work direction, and needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions; oversees volunteers, contractors, and seasonal workers; inspects contractor work to ensure quality control.
- Determines necessary tools, equipment, and materials, and purchases them when needed.

- Maintenance principles, practices, tools, and materials for maintaining and repairing parks,park facilities and buildings, sports fields, open spaces, landscapes, playgrounds and equipment, and weed abatement.
- Varieties of plants, trees and landscaping materials.
- Basic plant diseases; water, nutrient and light requirements; proper use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
- Irrigation system installation and maintenance techniques; basic plumbing.
- The operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and light to heavy power equipment.
- Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals.
- Records maintenance techniques.
- Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff.
- English in order to communicate in person, over the telephone or radio, and in writing.
- Applicable Federal, State, and local laws,regulatory codes, ordinances, and proceduresrelevant to assigned area of responsibility.
Ability to:Groundskeeper I:- Perform basic groundskeeping work.

Groundskeeper II: (In addition to the above)
- Perform groundskeeping and repair work on parks,park facilities and buildings, sports fields, open spaces, landscapes, playgrounds and equipment, and weed abatement with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
- Properly plant, prune and irrigate turf, trees and landscaping.
- Install, maintain, adjust and repair irrigation systems and related plumbing.
- Identify and resolve minor plant disease, nutrient, watering and related problems.
- Mix and apply fertilizers.
- Operate and perform routine maintenance of mowers and other power and hand tools and equipment.
- Interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.
- Provide training and work direction of temporary, work release, and seasonal helpers.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
- Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and specialized software applications programs.
Education and Experience:Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would beGroundskeeper I: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Groundskeeper II: In addition to the above, two (2) years of experience in landscape maintenance and repair equivalent to Groundskeeper I in Tuolumne County.
Licenses and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
