Position Title: Grounds Maintenance Worker (Cemetery)
Department: Parks & Recreation
Location: Mt. Peace Cemetery
Work Schedule: 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (with possible standby hours)

The Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated Grounds Maintenance Worker assigned to Mt. Peace Cemetery. This position performs skilled labor in the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of cemetery grounds and related facilities, ensuring a safe, respectful, and well-maintained environment for visitors.

This role requires attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

This position may require standby hours, and flexibility based on operational needs.

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Maintains trees and plant life; trims plants and hedges; weeds plant beds; grinds stumps; prunes bushes; cuts and trims trees.
  • Sprays herbicides and pesticides; plants trees, bushes, and flowers.
  • Operates the riding zero turn mower, and smaller mowers, saws, edger, weed eater, blower and smaller power tools
  • Removes weeds and debris from working areas, public lands, and other areas.
  • Performs regular and routine maintenance, cleaning, repairing and servicing of equipment; reports major equipment problems to the assigned supervisor, and delivers equipment for repair.
  • Works on a call-out basis in response to emergencies such as special events, natural disasters, leaks, equipment failures, and other urgency calls.
  • Answers citizen and agency representative inquires; refers more complex questions to the assigned supervisor.
  • Creates and conducts appointments with citizens to include but not limited to sales, transfers, refunds and other data entry.
  • Provides extensive assistance to funeral home, burial companies, monument companies and other businesses conducting work within cemetery grounds.
  • Process payments through Rec Trac and deposits cash and credit card slips at the end of the day.
  • Assists Sexton in managing third party companies working within the cemetery.
  • Conduct cremation burials alongside Sexton or solo if necessary.
  • Occasionally installs and repairs irrigation systems.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented six (6) months of experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
  • Must have working knowledge of operating computers and software programs, preferable Rec Trac.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

Mathematics:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Reasoning:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
