The Laborer Grounds Maintenance Tractor Operator maintains grounds of industrial, commercial, or public property and repairs structures and equipment. Works under the supervision of the Project Manager or designee.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain grounds of industrial, commercial, or public property and repairs structures and equipment.
  • Cut grass using walking type or riding mowers (less than 2000 lbs)
  • Trim hedges and edges around walks, flowerbeds, buildings, and other structures within the lawn areas using hedge trimmers, clippers, and edging tools.
  • Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth using shears and other hand tools such as powered saws and trimmers.
  • Spray lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer or insecticide (if properly licensed).
  • Plant grass, sod, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Water lawns and shrubs during dry periods using hoses and sprinkler systems.
  • Pick up and remove leaves, paper, or other litter and dispose in designated areas.
  • Remove snow from walkways, doorways, roof hatches, driveways, parking lots, roads, and rec yards, using shovel, snow blower, skid steer, pickup truck with plow & salter, and dump truck with plow.
  • Spread salt on walkways and other areas by means of hand salters and truck salters.
  • Paint fences, gates, benches, tables, guardrails, and other outbuildings
  • Assist in repair of roads, walks, curbing, buildings, and mechanical equipment.
  • Clean comfort stations, offices, workshop areas, and parking lots by sweeping by hand or utilizing street sweepers.
  • Work is completed in a priority established by supervision or facility need.
  • All work, repairs, tests, modifications, alterations and installations will be completed with a high degree of professionalism, quality and craftsmanship.
  • Lull in workload is used to maintain a clean and orderly work area and to ensure clerical tasks are up to date. Keeps up to date on departmental and facility safety standards and local codes and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience in lawns and grounds maintenance utilizing all equipment to perform tasks.
  • Possess a current New York State driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate (inter/intra skills) with employees and department heads.
  • Ability to follow Standard Codes of Conduct pertaining to interaction with detainee population.
  • Basic knowledge of grounds and landscaping
  • Ability to drive or learn to drive a skid steer and change out various attachments to the skid steer such as buckets, plow blades, street sweeper, and forks.
  • Ability to drive a 4x4 pickup and dump truck and operate snow plows and salters that are attached to them.
  • Ability to operate or learn/train to operate lifts needed for tree removal or trimming.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to pass extensive federal background investigation.
