Summary:

The GSRP Substitute Teacher is responsible for maintaining a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment in the absence of the regular Lead or Associate Teacher. This individual supports the implementation of daily classroom activities aligned with the Great Start Readiness Program guidelines and ensures continuity of instruction and care for Pre-K children.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Follow lesson plans and daily schedules prepared by the Lead or Associate Teacher.

  • Supervise and engage preschool children in developmentally appropriate activities that support social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly classroom environment in accordance with licensing and GSRP requirements.

  • Support classroom routines including transitions, meals, rest time, and outdoor activities.

  • Foster positive relationships with children through active supervision, guidance, and redirection as needed.

  • Collaborate with classroom staff and administrators to ensure continuity of care and instruction.

  • Ensure compliance with Michigan Department of Education (MDE) GSRP guidelines and program expectations.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.

  • Monitor and report any concerns regarding child safety, behavior, or well-being to appropriate staff.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a variety of classroom settings.

     

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • A valid Center-Based Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.

  • Must be at least 16 years of age in accordance with the Licensing Rules for Child Care Centers.

  • Ability to meet all applicable GSRP and child care licensing requirements, including comprehensive background check requirements and required orientation/training for program staff.

  • Any long-term substitute serving for more than one month must meet the qualifications for the position being filled.

     

Preferred:

  • Associate degree or coursework in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.

  • Experience working with preschool-aged children or in an early childhood setting.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with young children and as part of a team.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Employee must be capable of performing physical demands of the job, including but not limited to lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, and standing for long periods of time.
