Shop Laborer- $20-23/hr

Job Description

This role supports a busy manufacturing shop by performing a wide range of general production and labor tasks. You will clean and maintain work areas, use hand and power tools, sand and grind materials, and operate machinery once fully trained. With multiple openings across different functions, this position offers hands-on work in a large industrial environment and the opportunity to build valuable manufacturing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general labor and production tasks in a manufacturing shop environment.
  • Clean and maintain work areas to ensure a safe, organized, and efficient workspace.
  • Use hand tools and power tools to complete daily production and fabrication tasks.
  • Sand and grind steel components and other materials as needed to meet production requirements.
  • Operate manufacturing equipment and industrial machinery after receiving proper training.
  • Assist with deburring parts and preparing materials for the next stages of production.
  • Read and use a tape measure accurately to measure materials and verify dimensions.
  • Support material handling activities, which may include operating sit-down and stand-up forklifts if assigned to that role.
  • Assist with machine operation tasks as directed, following all safety and operational procedures.
  • If assigned as an operator, run production equipment in the steel or related industry according to work instructions.
  • If assigned as a material handler, move, stage, and organize materials and finished goods safely and efficiently.
  • If assigned as a sander/grinder, perform detailed surface preparation and finishing work on steel components.
  • If assigned as an industrial/automotive painter, prepare surfaces and apply coatings in line with quality and safety standards.
  • Follow all shop safety rules, use required personal protective equipment, and report any hazards or equipment issues.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production goals and maintain consistent workflow.

Essential Skills

  • 2+ years of experience working as a laborer or production worker in a shop environment.
  • Experience operating manufacturing equipment such as industrial machinery, forklifts, or sanders/grinders.
  • Proficiency using hand tools and power tools in a production or shop setting.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately.
  • Comfort performing manual labor in a large manufacturing shop.
  • Willingness to learn operation of additional shop machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and work instructions consistently.
  • Reliable attendance and the ability to work first shift hours with overtime as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1+ year of experience sanding and grinding steel components.
  • Experience operating various types of shop machinery beyond basic tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret shop blueprints.
  • Experience in the steel industry for operator roles is preferred.
  • Experience operating both sit-down and stand-up forklifts for material handler roles.
  • Experience in industrial or automotive painting for painter roles.
  • General production with exposure to deburring and machine operation tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality when working with metal components and finished parts.
  • Willingness to cross-train across different shop functions as needed.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large shop and manufacturing facility with active production operations. The environment is non-climate controlled, with dock doors open and fans used to help manage temperature during warmer seasons. This is a first-shift position, typically running from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with overtime available that may move the start time to 6:00 AM when required. Work involves regular use of hand tools, power tools, sanders, grinders, industrial machinery, and forklifts, depending on the specific assignment. The setting is hands-on and fast-paced, requiring comfort with industrial equipment, noise, and physical activity throughout the shift. Pay rates are determined based on experience level and individual needs.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Galion, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
