Job Title: General Laborer – Construction (1st Shift)

Job Description

This 1st shift Construction General Laborer role offers an immediate start and the opportunity to support a pre-erected job site by performing a wide range of hands-on tasks. You will help maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work area while assisting trades and site supervisors with general labor activities across the construction site.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general construction duties around the job site to support daily operations.
  • Clean and organize buildings, trailers, and surrounding work areas to maintain a safe and orderly site.
  • Break down pallets and dispose of materials properly in designated containers or dumpsters.
  • Pick up and remove trash and debris from the job site on a regular basis.
  • Move tools, equipment, and supplies to appropriate locations as needed throughout the day.
  • Assist with site cleanup, including sweeping, hauling, and general housekeeping tasks.
  • Support various construction activities such as basic concrete, carpentry, roofing, drywall, or demolition tasks under direction, when needed.
  • Use hand and power tools safely and correctly as directed by the site supervisor.
  • Safely navigate the construction site, following all safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Follow instructions from the site supervisor and assist with other general labor tasks as requested.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to perform heavy lifting and physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
  • Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions on an active construction site.
  • Strong work ethic with a reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious approach.
  • Willingness to learn new tasks and take direction from site supervisors and experienced tradespeople.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to help wherever needed around the construction site.
  • Ability to safely navigate a construction site and remain aware of surroundings.
  • Basic experience using hand and power tools.
  • Previous construction experience preferred but not required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in related labor-intensive environments such as farming, landscaping, mill, quarry, or mine work is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with construction equipment operation or basic equipment repair is helpful.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 safety certification preferred but not required.

Work Environment

This role is based outdoors at an active construction site on 1st shift. You will work in a physically demanding environment that may involve uneven terrain, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions. The job requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and handling of materials and tools. You will regularly use hand and power tools and work around heavy equipment and ongoing construction activities while following site safety rules and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and work-appropriate attire.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mount Vernon, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
