Overview

Job Title: General Foreman – Utility Line Clearance Position Summary

The General Foreman is responsible for the overall supervision, coordination, and performance of line clearance crews working near energized electrical systems. This position ensures safe, efficient, and compliant operations while maintaining high standards of productivity, quality, and employee engagement. The General Foreman serves as a key liaison between field operations, Human Resources, utility clients, and company leadership.


Minimum RequirementsExperience

  • Minimum of 4–5 years of experience in utility line clearance or tree trimming operations
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a supervisory or foreman role

Essential FunctionsLeadership & Workforce Management

  • Supervise line clearance crews and lead crew personnel, ensuring adherence to company policies, work practices, and union agreements (if applicable)
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and productivity
  • Manage employee relations in coordination with Human Resources, including hiring, discipline, performance management, leaves of absence (FMLA/ADA), and separations
  • Conduct candidate interviews and support onboarding processes, including compliance with I-9 requirements and proper hiring procedures
  • Evaluate employee performance, administer reviews, and recommend promotions or corrective actions
  • Train, coach, and mentor employees, providing ongoing feedback and development opportunities
  • Address employee concerns and resolve conflicts using fair and consistent judgment

Operations & Field Oversight

  • Plan, assign, and supervise daily work activities for line clearance crews
  • Interpret and execute work orders involving tree trimming, removals, and herbicide applications, including understanding utility maps, line types, voltages, and equipment symbols
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with industry standards and proper arboricultural practices near energized conductors
  • Provide technical guidance to crew leaders to support safe and efficient production
  • Adjust operations as needed to meet changing field conditions and operational demands

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Enforce all company safety policies and applicable regulations, including OSHA and ANSI (Z133 and A300) standards
  • Conduct safety meetings, tailgate sessions, and job briefings
  • Participate in and support drug and alcohol compliance programs, including reasonable suspicion procedures
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and property damage claims; assist in resolution of minor claims as needed
  • Coordinate with Risk Management and Safety personnel on workers’ compensation cases, return-to-work programs, and training initiatives

Administrative & Reporting Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records and reports related to crew operations, including:
  • Work orders completed
  • Production units and crew time
  • Incident and accident reports
  • Equipment issues and property damage
  • Provide timely updates and reports to management and utility representatives
  • Track crew productivity and ensure alignment with operational goals

Equipment & Cost Control

  • Monitor and ensure proper operation, maintenance, and inspection of tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Manage labor and equipment resources efficiently to control costs and maximize productivity
  • Identify and request major equipment repairs or replacements as necessary
  • Stay informed on new equipment, techniques, and industry best practices

Emergency Response

  • Lead and coordinate emergency response efforts, including storm restoration and hazard mitigation
  • Mobilize crews and resources to restore service and ensure public safety
  • Maintain updated contact information for crew members to ensure rapid response capability

Customer & Public Relations

  • Maintain regular communication with customers, property owners, utility representatives, contractors, and public agencies
  • Address concerns and resolve issues professionally and courteously
  • Represent the company in a positive and professional manner at all times

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow
  • Regular exposure to hazardous equipment, loud noise, and energized electrical systems
  • Work may involve rough terrain, vegetation hazards, and environmental elements such as insects and dust

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of tree identification, growth habits, and proper arboricultural practices
  • Understanding of electrical distribution systems and ability to read and interpret circuit maps
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and ANSI Z133 and A300 standards
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively under pressure
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar computer applications

Certifications & Requirements

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and medical card
  • Herbicide applicator/operator certification (as required by law)
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and background check

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 30 pounds frequently
  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, and entering/exiting vehicles
  • Ability to work extended hours, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs
