National Tropical Botanical Garden The Kampong Gard ener 1 JOB POSTING The mission of the National Tropical Botanical Garden is to enrich life by perpetuating tropical plants, ecosystems, and cultural heritage . The National Tropical Botanical Garden has an immediate opening for a casual status Gardener 1 at The Kampong location in Coconut Grove, Florida. The Kampong Gar dener 1 will have a strong desire to care for plants and plant collections in a botanical garden setting. The role involves hands -on garden work and maintaining plant collections. Must possess good communication and team work skills . Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned . • Perform lawn maintenance by mowing and/or weed eating or other means as directe d • Prepare public -access areas for visitors before business opening by removing debris and blowin g • Support the general plant collection maintenance: water, fertilize, weed, prune, and stake plant s • Basic understanding of the plants and history of The Kampon g • Monitor and manage waste trash/recycling Mondays and Thursday s • Willing and able to apply organic and chemical fertilizer s • Able to observe plant conditions, evaluate needs and consult with Horticulture Manage r • Safely operate a variety of garden power tools including lawn mowers, weed trimmers, chainsaws, hedg e trimmers and other s • Practice good planting practices, and remove plants as needed under direction from superviso r • Monitor new plantings to ensure the highest survival rate possibl e • Keep plant collections weed free and pest free as possible through applied Integrated Pest Management practices when feasibl e • When necessary must be able and willing to apply herbicides and pesticide s • Control weeds in landscaped and other designated areas through physical, mechanical and chemical method s • Keep all areas of the garden looking neat and well -kept and debris fre e • Maintain all garden tools and vehicles responsibly, and in a safe manne r • Assist Visitors Service Team with mission related event s • Assist with closing tasks of the Garden, including putting trash in designated area s Schedule: Saturdays , some weekdays and on call.
