This employee will be tasked with assisting in operations at the Cohen Campbell Fisheries Center and the Barnwell State Fish Hatchery. Job Duties Include:
Assisting in fish culture and harvest activities at the Cohen Campbell Fisheries Center and Barnwell State Fish Hatchery.
Carrying out all duties necessary to ensure that fish production meets the annual production goals assigned by the Hatchery Coordinator.
Conducting and/or supervising the maintenance of Cohen Campbell Fisheries Center and Barnwell State Fish Hatchery. This includes:
performing all duties necessary to maintain hatchery grounds, ponds, office, work buildings, residence and all other associated structures in a manner what will maximize service, efficiency and aesthetic value.
Being on-call 24 hours/day.
Assisting in the grass carp certification procedure. This includes:
ensuring that the Coulter machine is in working order, preparing equipment and sampling supplies, handling grass carp, preparing/extracting blood samples, and cleaning equipment after verifications.
Providing assistance with maintenance and construction activities on State Lakes Maintenance projects, other State hatcheries, regional and research projects and coordinating outreach activities including organizing fisheries related events, stocking and hauling for DNR partners and meeting with groups to promote SCDNR and the fish hatchery program.
Assisting hatchery staff with administrative record keeping.
Maintaining personally-assigned vehicle and all Department-issued equipment.
A high school diploma and two (2) years of related experience in wildlife, fisheries or agricultural work; or an associate degree in the technical sciences.Ability to work in the field in adverse weather; safely operate small boats; collect, enter, and manage data reliably; operate aquaculture equipment; ability to work with and communicate with the public, co-workers, and supervisors; and perform heavy physical labor. Knowledge of pond draining and fish harvest operations preferred. Ability to consistently lift heavy objects. Ability to work long hours, work at night, work in inclement weather, and participate in some overnight travel.
