The purpose of this classification is to enforce fire and life safety codes through inspections and investigations. This position provides guidance to the Fire Inspector I and other assigned workers, audits activities, and ensures compliance with fire safety laws and codes across various construction and residential sites.The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Provides direction, guidance, and training to contracted workers, interns, and community service workers in fire safety inspections.

Audits work activities of contracted building inspectors, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.

Interprets and enforces provisions of adopted building, fire prevention, life safety, and related codes.

Coordinates scheduling and monitoring of inspections to maximize efficiency and compliance with fire safety codes.

Plans daily inspection schedules, ensuring all tasks are completed efficiently and in compliance with regulations.

Investigates complaints of unsafe buildings, unlicensed contractors, or non-permitted construction.

Investigates fire causes and prepares detailed reports on fire origin and violations.

Reviews building plans, construction documents, and site inspections for code compliance.

Conducts safety inspections of properties damaged by fire, storm, or other hazards.

Provides technical expertise and troubleshooting for difficult inspection or construction issues.

Performs unscheduled spot inspections to ensure safety and identify code violations.

Prepares and maintains accurate records of inspection activities, including follow-up reports on failed inspections.

Prepares notices for failed inspections, hazardous conditions, or violations, and takes corrective action as needed.

Coordinates with other inspectors, departments, and external stakeholders to address code enforcement and compliance issues.

Reviews and processes permits and inspection reports, ensuring accurate data entry into department systems.

Attends job site meetings, staff meetings, and training sessions to stay current on fire safety and code enforcement practices.

Attends job-site construction meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings as needed.

Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and standards through professional development and continuing education.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include answering telephone calls, typing documents, entering data into computer, making copies, sending/receiving faxes, filing documentation, processing incoming/outgoing mail, or maintaining/refueling motor vehicle.

Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

Performs other related duties as required.High school diploma or equivalent, or vocational/technical degree.

State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector II certification.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in fire and life safety inspections.

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job may be considered as a substitute for the experience requirement.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license. For application purposes, a valid driver’s license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized; with the ability to obtain the State of Florida driver’s license within thirty (30) days from the date of employment.Data Utilization: Requires the ability to evaluate, audit, deduce, and/or assess data using established criteria. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and/or design data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds); may occasionally involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-75 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require oral communication.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, or ladders/heights.
