Fire Inspector I is an entry level position where successful candidates will progress with training to skilled level work as a Fire Inspector. You will be trained in the various areas of fire prevention. Specific tasks include inspecting commercial and residential buildings and properties to enforce Federal, State, and local codes and regulations. As well as, responding to complaints regarding fire code violations, reviewing, approving, and inspecting construction plans of fire safety systems, educating the general public in proper fire safety methods and practices, assisting with fire investigations and completing the necessary computer data entry to document completed inspections.

Newly hired Fire Inspector I's will have the opportunity to progress through the promotional process to Fire Inspector II upon satisfactory completion of training as outlined in the Reno Fire Department Policies and Procedures.

We currently have one vacancy in the Fire Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

  • Conducts fire and life safety inspections of residential, commercial, and mercantile occupancies. Assists with fire and life safety inspections of industrial, institutional, public assembly, and other establishments and properties to identify, report, and eliminate fire hazards.
  • Under direct supervision, assists with inspections of businesses prior to issuance of a business license; identifies unsafe fire and life safety practices or conditions, and develops corrective recommendations.
  • Investigates complaints regarding fire and life safety hazards in existing buildings, structures, and premises to determine if hazardous or illegal conditions exist. Documents code violations; recommends modifications to rectify violations; verifies conformance to existing codes.
  • Participates in the evaluation of fire alarm systems, automated fire extinguishing systems, building exiting systems and storage methods for explosives and combustible materials.
  • Under direct supervision, assists in the investigation of structure fires. Prepares reports on causes of fires and other relevant information.
  • Delivers lectures, demonstrations and talks on fire safety, prevention, protection, and inspection procedures.
  • Conducts fire drills in schools, hospitals, and other public buildings.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner; provides quality customer service.
  • Under direct supervision, assists in the plans examination and review process.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.

Education/Training:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Specialized training in fire behavior and/or the building trades and code enforcement
Experience:
Eligible candidates will have verifiable work experience in one or more of the following fields:
  • One year of work experience as an instructor in a public setting.
    OR
  • One year of work experience in plan checking; building or structural inspection; or life safety systems design, installation, or inspection.
    OR
  • One year of work experience conducting public fire code prevention or community code enforcement including interpretation and enforcement of related codes and regulations.
    OR
  • Two years of work experience as a full-time public fire department fire fighter.
    OR
  • Four years of experience as a public volunteer fire fighter.
License:
Valid driver's license

Requirements of the Position:
Must successfully complete the Reno Fire Department's Fire Inspector I Training Program as required by the Reno Fire Department Policies and Procedures.

Examination Process:
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online written skills tests (Basic Aptitude Skills Test and Computer Literacy & Internet Knowledge), an online Workplace Productivity Profile and a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:

  • Written Basic Aptitude Skills Test = 40%
  • Written Computer Literacy & Internet Knowledge = Pass/Fail
  • Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 60%

Online Assessment Details:

Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:
The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked"QUESTIONS"on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.
  • Responses to your T&E questions should be consistent with the information given in your application details. Answersare subject to verification.
  • Failure to complete all of the questions or incomplete responses will result in a lower score; therefore, it is advantageous for you to provide a full and complete response to each supplemental question.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:

Open Competitive Examination (Rule VII, Section 7):
In the event of tie scores, candidates will be provided a rank preference in the following order:

  1. City of Reno classified employees who are veterans
  2. City of Reno classified employees who are not veterans
  3. City of Reno non-classified employees and external candidates who are veterans

This preference is only used to break ties. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.


Promotional Examinations (Rule VIII, Section 7):
If two or more employees earn the same final score (including seniority points), veterans’ preference will be applied if any of the tied employees have submitted proof of an honorable military discharge. This preference is only used to break ties. If a tie still remains, it will be broken based on seniority in the current classification. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.


Seniority Points: Seniority Credit (Rule VIII, Section 9):
Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:

The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.


Appointment and Certification:
Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
