Basic Function:

Fire Inspector I: Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, inspect new and existing commercial buildings to assure compliance with established fire, building and other City codes and ordinances; conduct weed and vehicle nuisance inspections and enforce related codes; investigate fire scenes to determine cause and origin of fire. This is a civilian entry-level classification in the Fire Prevention Division. Incumbents work with moderate supervision seeking assistance as needed during routine tasks.

Pay Range:$65,590.10 - $79,725.15

Fire Inspector II:Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, inspect new and existing commercial buildings to assure compliance with established fire, building and other City codes and ordinances; conduct weed and vehicle nuisance inspections and enforce related codes. Fire Inspector II level is distinguished from Fire Inspector I by the performance of the full range of duties assigned with minimal supervision, seeking assistance only as needed for new or unusual situations. A Fire Inspector II may exercise some supervision over other Inspector I personnel.

Pay Range:$72, 344.69 - $87,935.54

Essential Duties:

Inspect new and existing commercial buildings, structures and installations including sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, emergency lights, exit signs and other required equipment and components to assure compliance with established fire, building and other City codes and ordinances; respond to community complaints concerning alleged violations.

Enforce municipal codes related to abandoned vehicles and weed abatement; inspect vacant lots and abandoned vehicles; locate owner of vehicle or lot; assure abandoned vehicles and weeds posing fire hazards are removed according to established timelines.

Identify violations; issue corrective orders and citations; notify appropriate agency, member of the community or personnel; perform follow up inspections to assure correction of violations; verify compliance for business and State licensing purposes.

Serve as an informational resource to the public concerning compliance issues and City building and fire codes and ordinances; respond to inquiries and provide information; prepare and deliver oral presentations concerning fire prevention and emergency practices and procedures; participate in public education programs; prepare related support materials.

Compile information and prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to inspections, violations and assigned activities.

Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software; drive a vehicle to conduct work.

Communicate with City personnel, community organizations and various outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Fire Inspector I

Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and three years of work experience dealing with the public or other related experience. Preferred experience should include equivalent to two years of progressive experience in the field of reading, interpreting and enforcing codes while dealing with the general public. Highly desirable experience includes fire and life safety inspections, building inspections, and public education.

Fire Inspector II

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of work experience as a full time Inspector for a Fire Prevention Division. Preferred experience should include; equivalent to two years of progressive experience in the field of reading, interpreting and enforcing codes while dealing with the general public. Highly desirable experience includes: fire and life safety inspections, building inspections, and public education


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Fire Inspector I

Valid California driver's license.

Ability to obtain Penal Code 832 Certification within six months of date of hire.

Fire Inspector II

Valid California driver’s license.

Penal Code 832 Certification

Successful completion of CFSTES Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D or equivalent
