Job Title: Finish Carpenter
Job Description

The Finish Carpenter oversees and performs a wide range of commercial general trades work, including finish carpentry, framing, blocking, installing studs, wood backing, doors, hardware, casing, cabinetry, and trim. This role also leads shorter-term projects of up to approximately three months, managing schedules, coordinating MEP subcontractors, and interpreting blueprints and floor plans to deliver high-quality results on time.

Responsibilities

  • Perform finish carpentry work, including precise installation of trim, casing, and detailed wood finishes on commercial projects.
  • Install framing, blocking, and studs to support doors, cabinetry, hardware, and other building components.
  • Install doors, frames, and related hardware, ensuring proper alignment, fit, and function.
  • Install wood backing and support structures to meet project specifications and support future fixtures and equipment.
  • Install and fit cabinetry and casework in commercial environments, ensuring a clean, professional finish.
  • Lead and run general trades projects with durations typically under three months, taking ownership of planning and execution.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and oversee MEP subcontractors to keep projects on track and aligned with overall timelines.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and floor plans to plan and execute work accurately.
  • Use technology tools and applications, including project management software such as Procore and schedule tracking tools, to manage tasks and timelines.
  • Measure, cut, and assemble materials using tape measures, hand tools, and power tools while maintaining a high standard of craftsmanship.
  • Ensure all work complies with commercial construction standards, project specifications, and safety requirements.
  • Manage time effectively to meet project milestones and maintain overall project schedules.
  • Travel directly to assigned job sites each day and adapt to changing project needs and priorities.
Essential Skills
  • At least 3 years of experience running own projects within general trades in a commercial construction environment.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on finish carpentry experience.
  • At least 3 years of trim installation experience, including detailed and high-visibility finish work.
  • Proven experience with door framing and installation, including wood backing and hardware installation.
  • Demonstrated commercial construction experience; residential-only experience does not meet the requirements for this role.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and floor plans accurately.
  • Proficiency with construction-related technology, including apps, Procore, and schedule tracking tools.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and complete tasks to meet project deadlines.
  • Proficient use of hand tools and power tools commonly used in carpentry and general trades work.
  • Ability to take ownership of smaller projects and work independently with minimal supervision.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working on commercial projects as part of a general contractor or with owners’ representatives.
  • Comfort working across a variety of general trades tasks beyond finish carpentry, including basic framing and installation work.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality finishes in occupied or high-visibility spaces.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with subcontractors, site teams, and project stakeholders.
  • Reliable transportation suitable for carrying tools and materials to job sites.
  • Capability to adapt to different job sites, project scopes, and schedules as needed.

Work Environment

Work takes place on active commercial construction sites, primarily performing general trades and finish carpentry work for a variety of projects and partners. You will travel directly to job sites each morning and typically work standard hours from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with flexibility to work longer as needed to keep projects on schedule. The role is field-based and hands-on, requiring regular use of hand tools, power tools, tape measures, and other carpentry equipment. You must provide your own truck or vehicle and your own tools suitable for commercial carpentry and general trades work. The environment is fast-paced and schedule-driven, with a strong focus on safety, quality workmanship, and coordination with other trades.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
