The City of Indio Internship Program is a continuous, as needed, opportunity for both highly motivated and aspiring undergraduate, graduate and doctorate Interns. This is an exciting opportunity for students to gain paid experience and on-the-job training at a government entity.
As one of the largest employers in the Coachella Valley, the City of Indio offers potential Interns the opportunity to work in a variety of fields across our departments.
The City of Indio Internship Program will give candidates the opportunity to develop in areas such as skills, personal development and life experiences guided by an assigned mentor.Applicants get the opportunity to learn and develop skills in the below areas:
  • Answers telephone; routes and screens calls; greets customers at counters and directs them to the proper City location; responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Learn the dynamics of financial municipal administration through direct support to senior staff.
  • Understand the intricacies of policy development and its impact on city operations.
  • Learn how government entities use separate funds to track revenues and expenditures for specific purposes.
  • Gain exposure to accounts payable, accounts receivable, business licensing, and general ledger.
  • Understand the City’s procurement and contract processing.
  • Understand how revenues and expenditures are compared and monitored against the adopted budgets and how variances are explained.

OTHER DUTIES THAT MAY BE INCLUDED:
  • Engage in data entry tasks including updating city records and databases.
  • Learn to navigate and utilize financial management systems (ERP).
  • Collaborate with cross-departmental teams on special projects.
  • Participate in research and analysis.
  • Assist with preparation of reconciliations.
  • Greet and assist customers at the public counter.
REQUIREMENTS
  1. A completed online application must be submitted along with completion of the supplemental questionnaire.
  2. A cover letter, resume, and copy of latest school transcripts must be attached to application.
  3. The Internship Program is open only to currently enrolled students either pursuing an Associates, Undergraduate, Graduate, or Doctorate degree. A student may either be attending school on a full-time or part-time status.
  4. No less than an overall C (2.0) grade point average (GPA).
  5. Must pass a criminal background screening
SCHEDULE:•The Program is a 12-week assignment, not to exceed 120 total hour without prior approval•Typical work week shall between 10-15 hours per week •Interns will be given the opportunity to work flexible hours. The working times must be within the days of Monday through Friday from the hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.•Interns working five (5) hours per day must take a minimum thirty (30) minute/ maximum sixty (60) minute, non-paid lunch break. Interns working eight (8) hours per day will be given two 15-minute breaks and must take a non-paid lunch break.•Management has the discretion to dictate the number of hours that the Intern will complete each week.Physical, Mental, and Environmental Working Conditions:

Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing statistical reports and data using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near vision in reading correspondence, statistical data and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The need to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds also is required. Additionally, the incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold with extreme sun exposure.
