Job Title: Field Service Technician
Job Description
The Field Service Technician coordinates and executes installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex forging presses and related equipment at customer sites. This role combines hands-on mechanical and electrical work with project coordination, customer interaction, and detailed documentation. The position supports equipment used in demanding industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical, and heavy construction, and requires frequent travel to customer facilities.
Responsibilities
- Install, commission, and set up forging presses and related equipment at customer plants accurately and efficiently.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and low-voltage systems on machinery to identify root causes of issues.
- Perform repairs on machinery and components, ensuring work meets quality, safety, and performance standards.
- Make approved modifications to machines and accessory components to improve performance or meet customer requirements.
- Assemble and disassemble machinery and related components precisely, using machine drawings and technical documentation.
- Clean parts and adjacent areas being repaired to maintain a safe and orderly work environment.
- Follow established tool control procedures, including maintaining, organizing, and accounting for tools before, during, and after projects.
- Maintain and use lockout/tagout devices and strictly follow all safety procedures when working inside machinery or performing repairs.
- Conduct thorough preventative maintenance on equipment, including inspections, adjustments, and replacements as needed.
- Prepare and complete detailed preventative maintenance reports within two weeks of returning from customer sites.
- Coordinate closely with internal sales and office staff to align on project scope, timelines, and customer expectations.
- Obtain required approvals for purchases related to field service work from the appropriate supervisor.
- Provide redesign or improvement suggestions for accessory components and communicate them through the proper internal channels for review.
- Ensure all necessary parts, tools, documentation, and travel arrangements are prepared before departing for customer sites.
- Verify that all tools and equipment are accounted for before leaving customer locations and organize tools upon return to the shop.
- Accurately pull, review, and highlight assembly and parts drawings, marking items as quoted or potentially needing replacement.
- Use precise measurements and maintain high accuracy while performing mechanical and electrical work.
- Complete assigned projects thoroughly, on time, and in accordance with quality and safety standards.
- Refer to machine drawings consistently when working in the shop, on-site, or when discussing technical issues with customers.
- Follow up with customers after service visits to confirm satisfaction, address additional needs, and document outcomes.
- Communicate effectively with customers and internal teams, providing clear updates on project status, issues, and resolutions.
- Participate in team-based problem solving and support colleagues on complex installations and service projects.
- Attend customer and vendor meetings as needed to support ongoing projects and service activities.
Essential Skills
- Ability to travel at least 70–80% of the time to customer sites during the week.
- 2–3 years of experience in mechanical or electrical work in an industrial or equipment-focused environment.
- High level of mechanical aptitude with strong hands-on troubleshooting capability.
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical systems, including moving components and assemblies.
- Experience troubleshooting hydraulic systems, including valves, pumps, and actuators.
- Experience troubleshooting pneumatic systems and related controls.
- Experience troubleshooting low-voltage electrical systems and controls.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Basic electrical skills, including working with motors, wiring, and control circuits.
- Strong customer service orientation with experience providing high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team in both shop and field environments.
- Strong organizational skills to manage tools, parts, documentation, and travel logistics.
- Attention to detail and precision in measurement, assembly, and documentation.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with customers and internal staff.
- Comfort using a laptop and basic digital tools for reporting, documentation, and planning.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with welding and fabrication for repair or modification of machine components.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word, for reporting and documentation.
- Bronze scraping skills for precision fitting and alignment of machine surfaces.
- Experience with PLCs, especially Mitsubishi PLCs, including basic troubleshooting and adjustments.
- Exposure to robotics, servo systems, CNC equipment, and related automation technologies.
- Experience working with overhead cranes or similar lifting equipment in an industrial environment.
- Ability to read and work from detailed assembly and parts drawings with high accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound technical judgments in the field.
- Capacity to manage multiple projects and service calls while maintaining thorough documentation.
- Willingness to suggest design or component improvements based on field experience.

Work Environment
This is a travel-intensive field role, with approximately 70–80% of the time spent at customer sites performing installations, maintenance, and repairs. When not traveling, you work in a modern, temperature-controlled facility that supports comfort and productivity. The in-house environment is team-oriented, with a tight-knit community that collaborates on planning, troubleshooting, and project support. The standard in-house schedule runs from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. You receive a laptop and dedicated desk space for planning, documentation, and communication. Work involves industrial machinery, including forging presses, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, motors, PLCs, and related automation equipment, and may require the use of cranes, welding equipment, and precision measuring tools. Safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, tool control, and adherence to technical documentation, are an integral part of daily operations, both in the field and in the shop.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Marion, OH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $35.00/hr.
