Fiber Installation & Splicing Technician
Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Fiber Installation & Splicing Technician to perform and oversee fiber installation, splicing, testing, and maintenance activities across outside plant and inside plant environments. This role requires strong technical expertise in fiber optic systems, field operations, and customer service, along with the ability to work independently and support emergency dispatches when needed.
Essential Functions
Fiber Installation & Splicing
- Perform or direct fiber installation and fiber splicing using both fusion and mechanical methods.
- Install, terminate, and maintain fiber optic cables and related equipment.
- Work primarily with single-mode fiber optic cables up to 864 count, including loose tube, ribbon, armored, and dielectric cable types.
- Assist with fiber installation and splicing from handholes or manholes to building entry points.
- Assist with fiber installation inside buildings, including tight spaces, raised ceilings, and risers.
- Participate in cutover activities with other field technicians.
Equipment & Testing
- Work with switches, routers, fiber panels, splice closures, and connectors including APC/UPC – SC/LC.
- Use OTDR equipment to:
- Read and create trace routes
- Identify faults
- Calculate splice loss
- Perform end-to-end fiber testing
- Utilize light sources, power meters, and test sets for fiber validation.
- Calculate fiber attenuation values accurately.
Documentation & Assignments
- Read and interpret fiber schematics and splicing diagrams.
- Complete service order tasks including:
- Building conversions
- Plant field assignments
- Fiber cable assignments
- Optical equipment assignments
Safety & Operations
- Work a standard 40-hour week with availability for emergency after-hours dispatches on short notice.
- Follow all company safety procedures and minimize workplace hazards.
- Maintain company vehicles and equipment responsibly.
- Operate a full-size bucket truck and safely work at heights up to 40 feet.
Teamwork & Customer Service
- Deliver excellent customer service and exceed expectations whenever possible.
- Communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, and leadership.
- Support team members and collaborate across departments.
- Maintain punctuality, attendance, and professionalism.
Additional Responsibilities

- Travel overnight to other markets as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of fiber plant operations, schematics, and network facilities.
- Ability to learn new systems and processes through training, manuals, and field experience.
- Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft Office or similar tools.
- High-speed internet service at home.
