Family Court Commissioner (Open Until Filled)

Clallam County Superior Court is seeking a highly qualified legal professional to serve as Family Court Commissioner. Appointed by the three Superior Court Judges, this full-time position performs the duties and responsibilities of a Court Commissioner and Judge Pro Tem as assigned pursuant to RCW 2.24.040. The primary focus of the role is presiding over domestic, family, and juvenile court matters. The Commissioner works independently while remaining fully accountable to the Superior Court Judges for the effective management of assigned responsibilities and maintaining cooperative working relationships with court staff, attorneys, public officials, partner agencies, and the public. This position requires a thorough knowledge of laws and procedures governing court operations and administration. The Family Court Commissioner serves in a key role supporting the Superior Court’s mission and must perform duties in person as a full-time member of the court.

Note: Open Until FilledPowers of the Court Commissioner are specifically set forth in RCW 2.24.040. In accordance with all applicable laws, the Family Court Commissioner’s duties may include, but are not limited to, presiding over the following types of cases:
  • Dependencies (including ICWA Court)
  • Domestic Relations
  • Civil Protection Orders
  • Juvenile Offender
  • Truancy
  • Therapeutic Courts
  • Daily Civil Ex Parte
  • Search Warrants
  • Probable Cause Determinations
  • At Risk Youth
  • Children in Need of Services
  • Minor Guardianships
  • Family Law Settlement Conferences/Alternative Dispute Resolution

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university, a law degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school (or admission pursuant to APR 6 or equivalent program), a license to practice law in the State of Washington and a minimum of five (5) years of professional legal experience. A background in Juvenile and Family Law is desirable . The applicant selected for this position must adhere to the Code of Judicial Conduct.

Special Conditions

The Court Commissioner serves at the pleasure of the Superior Court Judges. Removal from office may be without cause and shall remain solely within the discretion of the Superior Court Judges.

Salary & Benefits:
The Family Court Commissioner annual salary is set per County policy. Clallam County provides a generous benefit package, which includes medical, dental and vision insurance, paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, and retirement. The salary is set at 90% of a Superior Court Judge salary.
