Job Title: Utility Pole Inspection Technician

Job Description

This role involves working as part of a field team to inspect wooden utility poles in a designated geographic area. You will perform manual excavation around poles, assess their condition, apply wood preservatives, and install support hardware as needed. The position is hands-on, outdoors, and requires daily travel to various job sites.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team to inspect wooden utility poles within a designated geographic area.
  • Manually excavate soil and debris around utility poles using a shovel, digging approximately 10 inches around the pole and 18 inches deep.
  • Assess poles for damage and structural integrity, documenting findings clearly and accurately.
  • Safely apply wood preservatives to utility poles according to established procedures.
  • Label each pole after inspection and treatment, ensuring records are complete and accurate.
  • Use a power drill to bore into poles as part of the inspection process.
  • Install steel trusses and other supports on deteriorated wood poles to reinforce their stability.
  • Travel daily from the laydown yard to assigned job sites and return at the end of the workday.
  • Follow all safety guidelines while working outdoors, using hand tools and power tools in varying weather conditions.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and functional condition.

Essential Skills

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license or government-issued ID.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to travel daily to assigned areas and job sites.
  • Experience using hand tools such as shovels for digging.
  • Experience using power tools such as power drills.
  • General labor experience in physically demanding roles.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and work effectively as part of a field team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Any prior experience with utility pole inspection is a strong plus.
  • Experience in construction or outdoor field work is beneficial.
  • Experience with digging and trenching work is helpful.
  • Familiarity with applying treatments or preservatives to wood is an advantage.
  • Comfort working 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday.
  • Strong attention to detail for labeling, note-taking, and documentation.

Work Environment

This position is 100% field-based and outdoors, working in all weather conditions throughout the year. You will report to a laydown yard and then travel out to various job sites each day using company vehicles. The standard schedule is four 10-hour workdays, Monday through Thursday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break each day. The work is physically demanding and involves regular lifting, digging, and use of hand tools and power tools such as shovels and power drills. The environment is similar to a construction or utility field setting, where safety practices, proper use of personal protective equipment, and readiness for changing weather and terrain are essential.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
