Job Title: Environmental Field Technician

Job Description

The Environmental Field Technician supports a wide range of environmental consulting, testing, monitoring, and maintenance activities in the solid waste field. This role offers hands-on, practical experience at project sites where you will help operate and maintain landfill gas and liquids collection systems, collect and document environmental data, and ensure regulatory compliance. You will work outdoors in varied conditions, gain exposure to both operational and regulatory aspects of environmental projects, and contribute directly to the success of critical environmental systems.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all regulatory objectives and due dates are met by properly collecting, documenting, and organizing environmental data.
  • Operate and maintain Gas Collection and Control Systems (GCCS) on project sites, including performing routine and non-routine maintenance on GCCS components to ensure or restore proper operation and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor and analyze landfill gas (LFG) and liquids, recording measurements and reporting findings accurately.
  • Monitor and maintain liquids extraction systems within the GCCS to support safe and efficient system performance.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve complex GCCS issues in the field.
  • Respond to GCCS call-out devices and address system alerts or malfunctions in a timely and effective manner.
  • Travel daily to assigned job sites, with site locations varying based on project needs.
  • Perform environmental monitoring and compliance activities, including environmental site assessments and collection analysis, as directed.
  • Assist with light equipment operation and support construction-related tasks associated with environmental systems, as needed.
  • Complete required environmental health and safety training and follow all safety procedures while working in the field.
  • Prepare clear, professional business documents such as letters, reports, and memoranda related to field activities and findings.
  • Use Microsoft Office applications to enter, process, and analyze environmental data and prepare documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support environmental projects and field operations.

Essential Skills

  • At minimum, a high school diploma and at least 1 year of general working experience.
  • Ability to walk long distances over steeply sloped landfills and uneven outdoor terrain.
  • Ability to work safely in extreme hot and cold weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds on a non-consistent basis.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and reliably drive to job sites.
  • Willingness and ability to complete the OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour environmental health and safety class and annual 8-hour refresher courses.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical system failures in the field.
  • Ability to develop a solid working knowledge of flame-ionization detectors, photo-ionization detectors, explosive gas detectors, water level detectors, pH/temperature/conductivity meters, and other typical environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Ability to learn and apply general gas, soil, and air sampling techniques, including relevant environmental and health and safety regulations and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to become familiar with operation and maintenance techniques for landfill gas and landfill fluids collection systems, as well as landfill gas data, data processing techniques, and databases.
  • Ability to create clear and professional business documents, including letters, reports, and memoranda.
  • Proficiency in using a PC and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate’s (A.S.) or Bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in environmental science or another natural science such as geology, biology, or ecology is preferred.
  • Experience with environmental site assessment, environmental compliance, and environmental monitoring.
  • Experience with collection analysis in an environmental or industrial setting.
  • Light equipment operation experience in a field or construction environment.
  • High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe fusion experience is a plus.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities applied to complex technical systems.
  • Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining clear communication with project teams.

Work Environment

You will work primarily at environmental solid waste sites and landfill facilities, spending most of your time outdoors in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions, including heat and cold. The terrain can be steep and uneven, requiring frequent walking over sloped landfills and rough ground. The role involves daily travel to project sites, which may change depending on operational needs. You will work around active environmental systems such as landfill gas and liquids collection networks, using specialized monitoring instruments and typical field equipment. The environment is field-focused, safety-oriented, and hands-on, with an expectation of following all health and safety procedures and using appropriate personal protective equipment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rancho Cordova, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.
