Description:
The Emergency Department Pharmacist provides direct clinical pharmacy services to patients in a fast‑paced Emergency Department at IU Health North Hospital. This position supports safe, effective, and timely medication use through real‑time clinical decision‑making, collaboration with ED providers, and active participation in emergency response.
This is a 7 on / 7 off evenings position, working 10.5‑hour shifts, offering schedule consistency and work‑life balance while supporting high‑acuity patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Patient Care
- Provide real‑time pharmacotherapy support to emergency medicine physicians, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff.
- Participate in emergency responses including:
- Code Blue
- Stroke alerts
- Trauma activations
- Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI)
- Sepsis management
- Perform medication dosing, renal/hepatic adjustments, drug selection, and monitoring for ED patients.
- Conduct medication reconciliation and assess medication histories when appropriate in the ED setting.
Medication Safety & Optimization
- Review and verify medication orders for appropriateness, safety, and accuracy.
- Identify and prevent medication errors through proactive clinical intervention.
- Support antimicrobial stewardship, analgesia/sedation optimization, and evidence‑based ED protocols.
- Provide bedside pharmacokinetic consults and medication counseling when indicated.
Collaboration & Education
- Serve as a clinical resource to ED staff during evening hours.
- Educate physicians, nurses, residents, and students on medication use and new therapies.
- Support pharmacy residents and students as applicable.
Operational Support
Support medication distribution and automation systems serving the ED.
- Ensure compliance with IU Health policies and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental committees as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE‑accredited school.
- Active Indiana Pharmacist license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
- Ability to work independently during evening hours.
- Strong communication skills and ability to function in high‑pressure situations.
Preferred
- PGY1 Pharmacy Residency or equivalent acute care experience.
- Emergency Department or critical care pharmacy experience.
- PGY2 Emergency Medicine or Critical Care Residency (highly preferred).
- Experience participating in codes, trauma response, and RSI support.
Physical & Work Environment
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods within the Emergency Department.
- Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
- Exposure to high‑acuity clinical environments.
