The City of Pittsburg seeks an EQUIPMENT MECHANIC for the Public Works Department's Fleet Maintenance Division.
The Equipment Mechanic performs routine and full range of complex tasks and duties including service and mechanical repairs to over 275 automobiles, light and heavy trucks, construction equipment, Police vehicles, small engine and similar equipment, and other heavy and light power-driven equipment. This classification will learn policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties including maintaining service levels of the technical complexity of the assignments. Under the supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, this role supports essential public services by ensuring all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards.

About Public Works' Fleet Maintenance Division
The Fleet Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance of over 275 vehicles and pieces of equipment. Fleet Maintenance prepares recommendations for replacement of vehicles based upon maintenance history and reliability and subsequently prepares specifications for bids. The Public Works Department's mission is to maintain the physical assets of the City to the highest level possible within fiscal limitations, utilize the financial resources provided to the department in the most cost-effective manner possible, and thereby contribute to the quality of life of the residents of the City of Pittsburg.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Repairs mechanical defects in automobiles, trucks, graders, rollers, and other mechanical equipment; tears down motors; overhauls engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators and pumps.

• Performs minor repairs to radiators, fenders and body areas; performs tune-ups, oil changes, chassis lubes; replaces batteries, starters, shocks and struts; lubricates and services automotive equipment.

• Installs and reconditions electrical systems, spark plugs, distributors, condensers, points and rotors; relines and adjusts brakes; overhauls master and wheel cylinders; rotates and balances wheels; repairs, mounts and dismounts tires.

• Responds to questions and concerns from the general public.

• Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.



Education: Qualified applicants must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Experience: One year of experience as an automotive or equipment apprentice.

License:Possession of a valid class C California driver's license. Possess and maintain proof of auto liability insurance. Possession of a valid class A or B California driver's license with air brake and tank vehicle endorsements within 12 months of appointment.

Knowledge of:
Garage equipment and tools; basic principles, practices and materials used in automotive and equipment repair, occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.

Ability to:

What Happens Next?
