Tetra Tech is adding an Environmental Planner/Deputy Project Manager in the Midwest Region to support our growing energy practice, with specific emphasis on expanding our siting, permitting, and engineering business. With decades of national experience, Tetra Tech offers a wealth of technical knowledge and a strong understanding of federal, state, and local regulations.

Successful candidates will have a strong technical background in siting, permitting, and evaluating environmental impacts of projects. Preferred experience includes permitting for solar, wind, energy storage, and transmission line projects.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Manage and lead project tasks, including assisting with proposal development, cost estimates, project execution, budget tracking, and forecasting
  • Support energy facility siting/routing, permitting, environmental field surveys, resource analysis, agency coordination, and public outreach
  • Prepare conditional use, land use, right-of-way, and other local jurisdictional permit applications
  • Assist in managing preparation of resource studies (e.g., wildlife, wetlands, cultural resources) and state utility board applications
  • Support representation of clients before federal, state, and local agencies, planning commissions, and public forums
  • Work with agencies such as U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), and applicable Midwest state/local regulatory agencies
  • Support and apply NEPA and state-level environmental review processes
  • Research and interpret federal, state, and local regulations to support permitting feasibility and compliance
  • Coordinate across multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. or M.A./M.S. in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 5–8+ years of consulting experience, including project management and leading technical tasks
  • Experience with Midwest regulatory agencies and permitting frameworks (e.g., IL, IN, OH, MI, WI, MN, IA, MO, ND, SD)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting or leading renewable energy permitting projects (solar, wind, BESS, transmission)
  • Experience working with state siting boards, public utility commissions, or regional transmission organizations (e.g., MISO, PJM)
  • Experience preparing NEPA documentation or state-level equivalents
  • Experience developing proposals, scopes, and cost estimates
  • Preference for candidates located within the Midwest Region or Denver, CO

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed
  • Ability to conduct field visits, including walking on uneven terrain

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Hybrid or remote work environment with flexibility
  • Occasional fieldwork and travel throughout the Midwest Region
  • Exposure to outdoor conditions during site visits

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $90,000-$120,000 annually

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
